Referee Reports no longer required for Domestic Applications for Scholarship and /or Admission

Domestic students applying for scholarships for 2008 onwards are no longer required to supply written referee reports as part of the application process. However, applicants must still provide the names of two referees on the application form. The selection panel will disregard any reports that are submitted for the 2008 scholarship round.

Please direct any queries to the Graduate Centre. Application forms and supporting material have been updated to reflect the new policy and are available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/scholarships/postgrad/pgforms.html

2007 Annual Review of Progress

It is your responsibility to ensure that your Annual Review is submitted to the Graduate Centre by the DUE DATE OF 31 OCTOBER 2007. If you have not received a Review package please contact the Graduate Centre immediately so that a package can be forwarded to you.

You should make an appointment with your supervisor(s) to discuss your progress and another with your Postgraduate Coordinator, or Head of School/Discipline (which your supervisor(s) may wish to attend) for a few days later. After your supervisor(s) and Postgraduate Coordinator or Head of School/Discipline have discussed your progress with you and all parties have completed the relevant sections of the form, you should sign the form and lodge it with the Graduate Centre.

With the exception of students who commence in August, September or October this year, all research students, including those currently on leave of absence, are required to complete the 2007 Annual Review of Progress.

The Graduate Centre sent Annual Review packages to students' mailing addresses (or home address where no mailing address has been specified). Please check that your mailing address details are current. You can view and, if necessary, update your address details by logging on to Access Adelaide at: https://access.adelaide.edu.au/sa/login.asp

HDR Supervisor Induction Workshop

All new academic staff who wish to be involved in supervising research students are required to attend the HDR Supervisor Induction Workshop. The Induction Workshop is normally offered twice a year, in the first few weeks of each semester. While the regular workshop for this semester has already been held (on August 7th and August 9th) the RED team is happy to schedule a repeat session, if there is sufficient demand.

So if you would be interested in attending a Supervisor Induction Workshop later this semester, please let us know by email to researchereducation@adelaide.edu.au or by phone to x36035.

Information on the Effective Supervision Program can be found on our website via: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/rep/staff/

From time to time the Researcher Education and Development unit facilitates workshops for HDR Postgraduate Coordinators. These workshops serve a range a needs, eg: to help new PGCs come to grips with the range of policy, admin requirements and practical challenges; to provide a forum for PGCs to share expertise and insights; to provide feedback directly to the Dean of Graduate Studies on pertinent issues.

One PGC workshop has already been held this year. The RED team is happy to convene another one later this semester, if there is sufficient demand.

If you would be interested in participating in an HDR Postgraduate Coordinator Workshop later this semester, please let us know by email to researchereducation@adelaide.edu.au or by phone to x36035.

Supervisor Workshop - Helping Research Students with their writing

Tuesday 9th October (4.30pm to 8.00pm), repeated Thursday 11th October (9.30am to 1.00pm)

Places still remain in the HDR Supervisor Workshops 'Helping Research Students with their Writing', to be held on October 9th (evening) and repeated on October 11th (morning), at the Adelaide Graduate Centre, Level 6, 115 Grenfell St.

This workshop addresses one of the most common challenges faced by HDR supervisors: 'How do I best help my student develop as an academic writer and research communicator?'. We will examine what the research says about this issue, and we will seek to apply the findings to examples of student writing. The needs of both native and non-native writers of academic English will be considered.

All academic staff are welcome. Please register by phoning x36035 or on-line at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/rep/staff/timetable.html

Participants should bring along to the workshop typical or problematic examples of their students writing.
