Is an embargo automatically placed on a thesis?
YES, if you have signed a Student Project Participation Agreement (SPPA).

NO, if your research is commercially, culturally, or politically sensitive, or if you are awaiting the results of a patent application or publishing contract.  If you and your supervisor believe an embargo is required (and you have not signed an SPPA) you must apply for one as early as possible in your candidature.  Further information is provided in the Research Student Handbook.

Whats an embargo?
An embargo is a period during which access to a thesis is not allowed. Normally an embargo is for twelve months, with effect from the date of thesis submission.

An embargo may be required because of issues relating to intellectual property, or where a thesis contains research which is subject to a security restriction, or where a thesis contains commercially, culturally, politically or other sensitive data which the author has undertaken to the source not to disclose for a limited period of time. Further information is provided in the Research Student Handbook.

Why have I received a letter telling me I have been suspended?
Candidature and any scholarship payments will be suspended if you do not comply with any formal requirement of your candidature: for example, non-lodgement of a formal review of progress; unapproved leave of absence; failing to return from leave of absence on the expected date; failing to notify the Graduate Centre of your return from leave of absence within two weeks of your return; and non-payment of University fees and charges. The reason for your suspension is detailed in the letter. Further information is provided in the Research Student Handbook.
