Scholarships

Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents

The University of Adelaide offers a range of scholarships for domestic higher degree by research students including Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs), Australian Postgraduate Awards (Industry) (APAIs) and Divisional Scholarships.

APAs are one of the primary sources of support for students undertaking research degrees at the University of Adelaide and are funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). They are allocated according to the terms and conditions specified by DEEWR, namely, on the basis of academic merit and in designated areas of research strength within the University. APAIs are available to undertake a specific research project for which funding has been obtained from the Australian Research Council to support collaboration between the University and an Industry partner.

All 'major' scholarships provide an annual living allowance, which is renewable for the tenure of the award, subject to satisfactory progress. The tenure for a PhD scholarship is three years, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of six months and the tenure of a Masters by Research scholarship is two years, with no possibility of extension. In 2009, the base stipend for a full time APA and Divisional scholarship holder is $20,007 and for a full time APAI holder (who commenced from 2005 onwards) $26,140, tax free per annum. The base stipend for a full time APAI holder who commenced in 2004 or earlier is $25,872.

Further information about the scholarships available and how and when to apply is provided in later sections of this Handbook and is also available from the Senior Scholarships and Finance Officer in the Graduate Centre.

The 2009 conditions of award for APA, UAS and Divisional Scholarships have been reproduced in Appendix 2 and are also available on the web at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au graduatecentre/scholarships/postgrad/pgresearch.html

If you are unable to find the answer to your question, please contact the Graduate Centre for advice.

International Students

Two main categories of scholarship are available to outstanding international applicants.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships and Adelaide Scholarships International provide for tuition fees and a living allowance equivalent in value to an Australian Postgraduate Award ($20,007 in 2009). Adelaide Graduate Fee Scholarships and Adelaide Fee Scholarships International provide payment of tuition fees only, for the normal duration of the program.

International applicants are not eligible to apply for APAs or Divisional Scholarships and the Graduate Centre is unable to accept applications for these awards pending the granting of permanent residency.

Travel Scholarships

Postgraduate travel scholarships are available to assist students wishing to undertake postgraduate research at universities and institutions within South Australia, interstate, and overseas.

Two types of assistance are available:

(i) Research scholarships for Australian students at overseas universities
These scholarships are intended for postgraduate students wishing to study at an overseas institution. Note that applications for most scholarships for overseas study available through Australian sources close around September each year.
(ii) Travel support for postgraduate students
Travel support is available to postgraduate students enrolled at the University of Adelaide who wish to undertake travel for the purposes of research (e.g. conference attendance), either within South Australia or outside the State.

Further information is available on the web at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/scholarships/postgrad/pgtravel.html or from the Senior Scholarships and Finance Officer in the Graduate Centre.
