A new postgraduate research position is to be made available from 2012 at the Centre for Automotive Safety Research. The project will be co-supervised at the University of Adelaide and the University of the Mediterranean (Universite de la Mediterranee) in Marseille, France. It is required that the student would spend a year in Salon-de-Provence in the South of France as part of their studies. The project is to be run from the Centre for Automotive Saftey Research, jointly with laboratories affiliated with the Universite de la Mediterranee operated by IFSTTAR (The French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks). CASR and IFSTTAR have entered into an MOU to facilitate collaboration in the area of road and vehicle safety. The project will concern vehicle safety and the assessment and rating of vehicles in this respect. This project will be the second of two similarly themed projects being run under CASR's collaboration with IFSTARR. Increasingly, vehicles will be equiped with advanced driver assistance systems that will assist in the prevention of crashes. It is therefore likely that crash speeds will be reduced and hence the performance of more tradtional crash safety systems (secondary safety) will be enhanced. The project will use a combination of in-depth crash investigation, impact/crash experiments and numerical crash simulation to investigate methods of integrating assessment of primary and secondary safety systems. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Social Sciences, Discipline of Gender, Work and Social Inquiry The Discipline of Gender, Work and Social Inquiry in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Adelaide is seeking a PhD student to conduct ethnographic work to investigate why people with eating disorders are reluctant to engage with treatment services. The scholarship is supported by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant (APAI) and industry partners Flinders Medical Centre, SA Health and ACEDA (formerly the Eating Disorder Association of South Australia).
Field of Study: Why are people with eating disorders reluctant to engage with treatment services? This project will use ethnographic methods and psychological evaluations to investigate why people with eating disorders delay seeking help. Research to date has mainly focused on people who engage with treatment services, but we know nothing about the significant number of people who do not seek help, or delay seeking help for many years. This research will identify this group in order to understand their motivations for maintaining eating disorder practices, and find out what socio-cultural factors support eating disorder behaviours. It is anticipated that the project will develop new knowledge in understanding the complex cultural underpinnings of eating disorders and outcomes of this project will be used to develop effective early intervention strategies. The successful candidate will gain valuable transferable skills through research training, organisational understanding of government and non-government partners, and presenting to community, academic, policy and professional audiences. Eligibility: Applicants must have completed and been awarded an Australian Honours Degree or equivalent at the level of 2A or above in a relevant Discipline (Gender Studies, Anthropology or Sociology). Value: The scholarship will be for the period of three years and has a stipend of $32,000 per annum. The APAI is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval. To Apply: Application for Admission must be submitted using the Online Application Form available at: https://hdrapp.adelaide.edu.au/auth/login Please email a summary of your application for admission to Dr Megan Warin megan.warin@adelaide.edu.au with 'Application for APAI' in the subject heading.

Nitrogen Use Efficiency Applications are invited for the following scholarship leading to the degree of PhD in Science. Four scholarships are available and will be supported by The University of Adelaide and The Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics. Field of Study: The PhD projects on offer aim to improve the nitrogen use efficiency of the cereal crop maize, by increasing the efficiency of mechanisms plants use to accumulate and utilise nitrogen. Projects will use the latest gene technology, biochemistry and plant physiological techniques to define nitrogen use efficiency traits, which will aid in the improvement of nitrogen use in maize and other cereal crops. The project involves a close collaboration with our Industrial Partner DuPont-Pioneer (Johnston, Iowa US). ACPFG offers professional development and a mentoring program for PhD students. Maize is an important global crop where approximately 818 million tonnes is produced annually. Maize provides an important staple of global agricultural food production where it is used for both animal and human consumption. The production of maize, like most cereal crops, is heavily dependent on the supply of nitrogen fertilisers to overcome inherent soil nitrogen deficiencies that limit growth and economic yields. Unfortunately, the use of nitrogen fertilisers by cereals is poor, where only 30-40% of the applied nitrogen is actually accessed and used by the plant. While plants need nitrogen to grow, the inefficient use of nitrogen in agriculture is a growing global concern as it impacts a direct cost to the grower but more importantly a larger indirect cost to the environment through increased nitrogen pollution. We seek motivated students with backgrounds in the following areas: agriculture; biology; biomeduical sciences; biotechnology; genetics; molecular biology; plant physiology; science. Further Information: Flyer Applications: Will be accepted through until December 2012. Applications to be emailed to Dr Monica Ogierman, ACPFG Education Manager and must include the following documents:

More recently FNSSA has been the owner of several nature reserves. The Lirabenda Endowment Fund was established in August 2005 with the proceeds from the sale of one of these properties, Lirabenda near Mylor. One of the aims of the Fund is to encourage and promote research into the biota and natural environment of South Australia and it is offering research grants to further this aim.. Applications are encouraged from research institutions for supervised project funding at the Honours Degree, Masters Degree and PhD levels and for projects conducted by researchers at South Australian Research Institutes. Guidelines and application forms can be downloaded. The FNSSA would very much appreciate it if you would send these out to researchers at your Institution who may be interested in applying for a grant. The FNSSA is a completely voluntary organisation and has limited ability to reply quickly to email requests for guidelines and application forms. The guidelines and application forms will also be available on the Society's website, www.fnssa.org.au. It is envisaged that applicants will be informed on the decisions of the Grants Committee towards the end of January 2012. Enquiries and applications on the appropriate form, should be directed to: The Hon. Secretary, For general information and final application forms: Phone: 08 8365 2491 |

Australian Rotary Health is Australia's largest non-government funding body of mental illness research. We also fund research in other health related areas. The genesis of Australian Rotary Health in 1981 was the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Late Ian Scott, from the Rotary Club of Mornington, established Australian Rotary Health to support research into SIDS. As Australian Rotary Health grew so did the vision of medical research possibilities. Supported by Rotarians Australian wide, Australian Rotary Health was soon in a position to sponsor health research in areas that did not readily attract funding. Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision of health. We are a catalyst for projects that improve the quality of life for people who are least able to assist themselves. For more information about the current opportunities, and the application process, please visit the Australian Rotary Health website. |
