Australian Rotary Health is Australia's largest non-government funding body of mental illness research. We also fund research in other health related areas.

The genesis of Australian Rotary Health in 1981 was the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Late Ian Scott, from the Rotary Club of Mornington, established Australian Rotary Health to support research into SIDS. As Australian Rotary Health grew so did the vision of medical research possibilities. Supported by Rotarians Australian wide, Australian Rotary Health was soon in a position to sponsor health research in areas that did not readily attract funding.

Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision of health. We are a catalyst for projects that improve the quality of life for people who are least able to assist themselves.

Current status: Applications open

William T Southcott Scholarship >>
Project 1: Medical application of new developments of photonics-based monitoring of radiation dosage

Applications are invited a scholarship leading to the degree of PhD in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Field of Study: The Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing (IPAS) has developed new classes of micro-structured optical fibres that are fabricated with pores that traverse the length of the fibre. By manipulating coatings of these internal pores with specifically designed formulations, laser-based activation and detection can be achieved. In particular, there are developing technologies that enable the detection of radiation dosage.

This project will develop biological assays to assess these technologies for the real-time in situ monitoring of radiation dosage. The work will involve close collaboration with IPAS to test their developing technologies in animal models and human tissues. Results from this project will have direct implications in providing superior monitoring for radiation treatment of cancer. This is a trans-disciplinary project involving the medical applications of novel developments in photonics.

Eligibility: To qualify as an applicant you must:

Stipend: $30,000 per annum for three (3) years with the possibility of an extension of 6 months. It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.

If the recipient is successful in gaining an Australian Postgraduate award (APA), the Southcott bequest will provide a top-up scholarship of $10,000 p.a. for the duration of the APA scholarship.

Project 2: Role of gastric emptying in the regulation of blood glucose and blood pressure

Applications are invited for the following scholarship leading to the degree of PhD in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Field of Study: The PhD student will work with an internationally recognised research group based at the Royal Adelaide Hospital which has a strong record of effective mentorship and successful PhD student supervision.  Studies performed by this group, facilitated by the use of new techniques (particularly measurement of gastric emptying using radioisotopes), have demonstrated that the rate at which the stomach empties nutrients into the intestine is a major determinant of the blood glucose and blood pressure responses to a meal. This insight is of fundamental significance to an understanding and rational management of two common disorders - diabetes, where the regulation of blood glucose is impaired and so-called 'postprandial hypotension', where there is an excessive fall in blood pressure after a meal, leading to falls and other problems. The research programme which utilises Nuclear Medicine techniques will focus on these issues and is ideally suited to an enthusiastic student interested in research which has immediate clinical relevance.

Project 3: Improving cancer treatment using a novel medical imaging method

Applications are invited for the following scholarship leading to the degree of PhD in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Adelaide.

Field of Study: The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit at Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Kolling Institute of Medical Research at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney are collaborating on a new way of detecting cancer cell death in advanced cancer patients through medical imaging. Cancer cell death (or necrosis) is a well recognized feature of poor prognosis cancers. Cancer cell death is also a desirable outcome of anti-cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the newer targeted therapies. Conventionally, CT scans are used to assess response of patients’ cancers to anti-cancer treatments but often this information is available too late to prevent many patients being exposed to ineffective and potentially toxic treatments. Hence, it would be very useful not only for clinicians, but also for pharmaceutical companies, to know that a treatment is working soon after the administration. Being able to measure cancer cell death in vivo as a ‘read out’ of early cancer treatment responses is one way of providing more effective cancer treatments and of developing new ways to treat cancer.

To this end, we have developed a monoclonal antibody that specifically detects cancer cells dying as a result of low oxygen conditions (tissue hypoxia) or DNA-damaging anti-cancer treatments. Preclinical proof of concept for this antibody to act as a suitable imaging agent for the in vivo detection of cancer cell death has already been established. A clinical grade product for medical imaging is currently being prepared. We are now ready to obtain clinical proof of concept for the use of this antibody as a medical imaging agent. This project will involve the creation of a clinical protocol for a clinical proof of concept study, the implementation of the protocol and the conduct of the phase 0/1 clinical trial of the medical imaging agent. Medical graduates are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: To qualify as an applicant you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or have Permanent Resident status in Australia
  • Hold either an Honours degree (1st Class or 2A), a Master's degree in a health related field, or a medical qualification with evidence of research experience
  • Be able to meet the admission requirements for enrolment in a Higher Degree by Research program at the University of Adelaide

Remote candidature is possible but conditions apply - please refer to Internal or Remote Candidature in the Research Stduent Handbook.

For medical graduates, an additional tax free stipend may be able to be negotiated.

Enquiries: Kate Chadwick, Faculty Research Secretariat.
