Hormones, Ageing and Cancer: Searching for the Fountain of Youth Professor Ron Ross (University of Southern California) 17 November State Library of South Australia, 4.45pm for 5pmProfessor Ron Ross (Preventive Medicine and Urology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California) is an expert in hormone replacement therapy and the causes and prevention of hormone-related cancer. The inaugural HARC lecture addressed some of the broader issues surrounding cancer research related to ageing. Professor Ross' visit was hosted by HARC, the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories and the Hanson Institute. HARC/Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study (FAMAS) Research Forum 16 November Equinox Cafe, University of Adelaide FAMAS is a longitudinal study exploring a range of factors affecting men's health, particularly obesity and the utilization of health services. Facilitated by Professor Christina Lee and Professor Ron Ross this forum featured presentations from FAMAS researchers on findings arising from the study. Multidisciplinary Approaches to Ageing HARC Symposium October 13 State Library of South Australia Combining the work of emerging researchers, agency executives, clinicians and HARC researchers the annual symposium highlighted the need for greater integration between research discipline methods and data. Realising Ageing Research in Adelaide HARC Forum 2005 August 28 Equinox Cafe, University of AdelaideThis research forum explored Alzheimer's, ageing cells, and the health benefits of robust social networks. It involved more than 50 representatives from the Adelaide research community, service providers and government agencies. Presentations included: Professor John Carver (Head, School of Chemistry and Physics, University of Adelaide) 'Protein misfolding and age-related diseases' Professor Mary Luszcz (Deputy Director, Centre for Ageing Studies, Flinders University) 'The value of social networks for ageing well' Professor Richard Ivell (Head, School of Molecular and Life Sciences, University of Adelaide) 'The scientific basis of ageing in cells and tissues' Archive - HARC News 2005
The Adelaide Innovation Constellation HARC representatives attended a briefing session on the State Government Science and Technology Directorate's new initiative to encourage multi disciplinary, strategic research in South Australia that is economically robust. More information about the Constellation and the emerging research strategies can be found at: http://www.innovation.sa.gov.au/science__and__innovation/the_innovation_constellation HARC Young Investigator Awards 2005Mr James Smith (Department of Medicine, Department of Public Health) and Ms Gemma Carey (Department of Medicine, Department of Anthropology) were awarded the 2005 HARC Young Investigator Award for their joint presentation "Methodological benefits of embracing disciplinary difference through research into ageing men’s help seeking behaviours" at the recent HARC Symposium.
HARC and ASMR Healthy Ageing Research Prize (2 x$500)Ms Lena Truong (IMVS/Hanson Institute/University of Adelaide) and Ms Alicia Thorp (Nutritional Physiology, UniSA) were awarded the inaugural Healthy Ageing Research prize for papers presented during the Healthy Ageing Symposium at the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) Annual Scientific Meeting, held Wednesday 15 June, 2005. Ms Truong's winning paper was entitled 'Differential gene expression of bone anabolic factors and collagen type-I alpha chains at a distal skeletal site in primary hip osteoarthritis' (L Truong, JS Kuliwaba, DM Findlay and NL Fazzalari) and Ms Thorp's paper 'Lipid lowering effects of foods containing soy protein and isoflavones' (A Thorp, A Morris, J Buckley, T Mori, J Hodgson, B Meyer and P Howe).
