HARC session at ASMR (Australian Society for Medical Research) Scientific Meeting 2008

HARC is a long-time supporter of ASMR whose SA Scientific Meeting 2008 was held at Adelaide Convention Centre on 4th June.

A HARC-sponsored Healthy Ageing session, held in the afternoon, hosted six presentations. The scope of these presentations was wide-ranging and included:

  • health benefits from a group-based diet and lifestyle modification program in obese adults.
  • buccal cells as a non-invasive measurement of nutrient levels and markers of oxidative stress and accelerated ageing.
  • alteration of intracortical inhibition in ageing men.
  • Vitamin D deficiency's effect on trabecular bone loss and mechanical strength in rat tibias.
  • vigorous physical activity and its effect on cardiovascular risk factors.
  • immunohistological localisation of sclerostin in human trabecular bone from fragility hip fracture patients.

HARC oral presentation award-winner was Ashleigh Smith, University of Adelaide: Intracortical inhibition is altered in ageing men: The Florey Male Ageing Study

HARC poster prize was shared between Melanie Sulda, Flinders University: Dipeptidylpeptidase (DP) expression in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemai (B-CLL); investigation of the use of DPs as prognostic markers for B-CLL and Duminda Kumarasinghe, University of Adelaide: An investigation of underlying molecular mechanisms in primary hip osteoarthritis.
