Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Officer
The role of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Officer (ATSIEO) is to:
- engage, advise and liaise with senior staff across all faculties and divisions to promote the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy and increase awareness across the University
- work with Human Resources, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Advisory and Monitoring Committee to develop processes aimed at attracting and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees
- establish an employment register of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander job seekers in conjunction with Human Resources
- maintain current employment and community networks and develop new links between the University and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- liaise with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in regards to individual career development
- provide support and advice to local work areas, supervisors, and managers
- develop and maintain an active Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Alumni Chapter, and provide support to Human Resources in developing and maintaining a database of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates
- assist the Director of Wilto Yerlo, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Advisory and Monitoring Committee and Human Resources in the development and implementation of a University wide Cultural Respect and Awareness training program
- arrange and maintain contact with community organisations about the status of the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy
- act as Executive Officer for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Advisory Committee.

The Recruitment Process
The University provides support for managers and supervisors to recruit, manage and develop staff. More information is available on the Human Resources website.
To employ staff under the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy you need to:
- identify a vacancy
- develop a duty statement that suits the position, referring the duty statement proforma on the Human Resources website
- complete a Recruitment and Establishment Requisition Form, noting that the position is to be filled under the University's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy and send to Human Resources, which will notify the ATSIEO of the vacancy. The ATSIEO will arrange either for a recruitment process to commence or, in the case of a short term position (ie: up to six months), allocate the next appropriate person on the ATSI Employment Register after discussion with the workplace
- meet with the ATSIEO and the funding representative to sign funding agreements (if relevant) and nominate a starting date for the applicant to start work.
Manager Responsibilities
- When utilising short term positions or traineeships, select areas that have the potential for ongoing employment.
- Assist the appointee to gain all the skills necessary to be competitive for permanent employment.
- Ensure that all funding conditions are met (e.g. training arrangements, skill development in the workplace, reporting, acquittal of funds).
- Contact the ATSIEO to provide cultural preparation sessions for the section or team.
- Provide induction in accordance with HR policy and procedures.
- Identify and remove barriers to effective working conditions.
- Identify and provide support as needed (e.g. mentoring, training instruction, career development, and coaching).
- Actively promote cultural awareness, respect and understanding by ensuring an inclusive work environment work environment that respects gender, culture, language and history.
- Meet periodically with the ATSIEO to discuss the Indigenous employee's progress.
