Induction
New Staff
Welcome to the University of Adelaide
Commencing at a new workplace can be both exciting and a little overwhelming.
The transition to the new workplace is made easier and more effective if there
is a thorough induction process. It is the responsibility of your supervisor
to ensure you receive a comprehensive local induction. There are also the following
online training courses that you will need to complete as part of your probation.
The various elements of induction, including the local induction and the online courses, will give you the most important and relevant information to enable you to settle into life on campus as quickly as possible.
Online Training Courses to be completed as part of your probation:
- Corporate Induction (pdf 450kB)
A short course introducing you to the University of Adelaide and providing you with essential tools, links and information.
- OH&S Training
This course outlines your responsibilities and the University's responsibilities in Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare.
- Equity & Diversity (EO Online)
The course provides information on your rights and responsibilities regarding equal opportunity, discrimination and harassment under State and Federal legislation and University policy.
- Online Copyright Course
The Online Copyright Course is available for all staff. It is part of the required induction for new academic staff Level B and above and professional staff whose role requires an understanding of copyright issues.
Supervisors/Managers
All Supervisors/Managers with commencing staff are required to use Local Induction Templates to provide new staff with a complete local induction. The Local Induction Templates and forms for the administration of new staff are available under the Resources for Managers and Supervisors section of the Human Resources website.
Local Induction Roles
The following role statements outline the responsibilities of the Faculty/Division Induction Coordinators, the Local Induction Contacts, the supervisors of new staff and Human Resources.
Faculty/Division Induction Coordinators
- Customise the templates to include any specific requirements at the Faculty/Division level.
- Establish a list of Local Induction Contacts for each of your School/Branches in your portfolio.
- Explain the new induction templates that are to be used by the Supervisor when a new staff member commences in their area.
- Email your Local Induction Contacts about the new induction process (suggested wording attached).
- You may be required to provide support to your Local Induction Contacts if they are unsure about customising (at the local level) or any other elements of the templates.
Contacts
Faculty/Division Induction Coordinators can refer you to your Local Induction Contacts to obtain a copy of the Local Induction Templates for your School/Branch.
Local Induction Contacts
- Customise the templates to include any specific requirements at the School/Branch level.
- Contact all staff within your School/Branch advising them of the new local induction templates to use when a new staff member commences.
- Ensure the customised templates are available to all supervisors in your School/Branch (via your website or on a local network drive).
Supervisors
- The Local Induction Contact from your School/Branch will provide you with the Induction Templates (these should be available on a local network drive or website).
- Prepare for your new staff member to commence, following Stage 1 (Before the New Staff Member Commences) to Stage 6 (Finalising Induction) as outlined in the templates.
- Ensure a copy of the local induction template is signed by the incumbent (and Supervisor). Attach this to the Probation form, when received from HR (at end of probationary period). Retain a signed copy of the local induction template for your records.
Human Resources
- The un-customised version of the templates will be on the HR website and
will be regularly reviewed and updated.
- Advise the Faculty/Division Induction Coordinators of any changes to the
templates.
- Maintain, monitor, review and report on the induction program and completion
rates.
