Coaching through Difficult Conversations

Program Overview

This practically oriented program is designed to enable leaders to confidently and capably enter and succeed in difficult conversations that might currently be avoided or unsuccessful.

The program explores in detail 3 aspects of the difficult conversation:

  1. Breaking through the personal and cultural ‘handbrakes' that hold leaders back from entering or succeeding in challenging conversations
  2. Entering the conversation with every chance of succeeding
  3. Coaching through the conversation with a bias toward driving a commitment to a mutually agreed outcome

Nomination Criteria

This workshop is restricted to Senior Leaders

Topics Covered

Day one

  • Recognising and understanding why and when the conversation gets tough
  • Breaking through self barriers - why University leader's don't always enter or effectively manage difficult conversation
  • The "one big thing" each leader must shift when it comes to the next challenging conversation they will hold
  • How you work through cultural and personal barriers to not go to the tough stuff and hold accountability to change
  • What does a University leader that holds accountability and has the constructive conversations look like, sound like and act like.........and how is this different to today

Day two

  • Coaching effectively toward an end result once the issue has been named.
  • Managing the responses to tough conversations and the "games people play"
  • Ensuring workplace application makes a permanent difference

Learning Outcomes

This program is designed to attend to the real issues facing University leaders and balances the learning style between:

  • The mindset shift needed to enter successful challenging conversations in the face of the cultural barriers; and
  • The practical tools and techniques to building confidence and competence in succeeding with difficult conversations

The learning is applied to current, real and emergent situations that each participant faces with sufficient time between program days to enable application, reflection and personal development.

This program is experientially rich applying leading conversation models and methodologies.
