Employer of Choice for Women
The University of Adelaide is a recipient of the Employer of Choice for Women (EOCFW) Citation for 2007.
The EOCFW Citation is a prestigious acknowledgment by Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) of organisations that are recognising and advancing women in the workplace.
Each year, the EOWA assesses applications from a range of organisations to create a list of great places for women to work.
Successful organisations are recognised because they have:
- a flexible and inclusive work environment supported by the CEO and managers
- an excellent training and development program that encourages women to advance in the organisation
- policies and practices in place that discourage harassment or discrimination
- improved outcomes for women and the business.
What is Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace?
Equal Opportunity for Women:
- is a means of increasing the range of employment opportunities available to women
- is intended to ensure that all discriminatory practices which affect women are identified and removed from the workplace
- encourages programs which enable women to overcome the effects of past discriminatory practices
- is not positive discrimination because it ensures that all appointments are based on merit – “selecting the best person for the job”
- does not involve employment quotas
- aims to improve the gender balance of staff employed in academic, professional, administrative and technical positions
- ensures that the University’s human resources are used to their full potential
- ensures that women are included in the decision making processes which affect all members of the workforce
- is sound management practice.
The Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act 1999 requires the University to submit an annual Compliance Report on the University's performance in advancing women's employment to the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency.
