Role Statement for Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching)

The Associate Dean reports to the Executive Dean. The role is to be performed in such a way as to make an effective contribution to the learning and teaching within the Faculty in accordance with the University’s and Faculty’s strategic plans.

The key responsibilities of the Associate Dean shall include:

  • Membership of the following Committees:
    • University Learning and Teaching Committee, including the following duties:
      • Attend meetings and associated preparation (eg: read briefing papers)
      • Review University policy and procedures related to learning and teaching
      • Represent the University Learning and Teaching Committee on other University committees
      • Assess applications for teaching grants and awards
      • Participate in working parties on learning and teaching related issues
    • The Faculty Board, including the following duties:
      • Attendance of meetings and associated preparation (eg: read briefing papers)
      • Preparing reports
    • Chair and Convene the Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee, including the following duties:
      • Developing and produce agenda and briefing papers
      • Chairing meetings
      • Implementing actions arising from meetings
    • The Faculty Executive Dean’s Advisory Committee.
  • Responsibility for the development, management and implementation of the Faculty Learning and Teaching Plan and other relevant Faculty policy with regard to Leaning and Teaching, including the following:
    • Developing plans and policies
    • Reviewing plans and policies
    • Implementing plans and policies (eg: Faculty and University Learning and Teaching Plans, Faculty Operational Plan).
  • Keep up-to-date with advancements in learning and teaching approaches and policy by:
    • Attending relevant conferences
    • Reading government policy documents
    • Reading learning and teaching literature
    • Attending LTDU seminars.
  • Promote good practice in relation to Learning and Teaching in the Faculty by:
    • Distributing information on advancements on learning and teaching
    • Organising seminars on learning and teaching
    • Organising assessment of applications for the Faculty Learning and Teaching Prize.
  • Liaise with and be involved in benchmarking activities with other Universities and relevant organisations in relation to Learning and Teaching issues.
  • Liaise with the Executive, Academic and other Associate Deans in relation to Learning and Teaching matters.
  • Provide service to other areas of the University and outside organisations in Learning and Teaching related matters, if required, by:
    • Serving as assessor for Teaching Prizes in other faculties
    • Giving presentations for the LTDU
    • Serving as assessor for scholarships.
  • Other duties or projects as reasonably assigned by the Executive Dean.

Note: some Faculties may have an Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching – Undergraduate) and an Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching – Postgraduate).
