Health and Safety Committees

The importance of consultation and co-operation between management, employees and students is very important and cannot be understated. In order to achieve its objectives the University has established an extensive consultative network to manage occupational health, safety and welfare.

In particular it has established:

Health and Safety Committee Reporting and Monitoring

The University’s Executive and Senior Management are actively involved in the monitoring and driving of safety programs via the criteria on the UHSC and Division/Faculty reporting templates.

The reports summarise as a minimum, the following:

  • Unresolved HSW and Injury management issues requiring resolution further consultation
  • The status of corrective actions to ensure corrective action is being taken on non-conformances raised in RMSS
  • Two issues in the Faculty/Division that the Executive and Heads of School/Branch consider to be of highest safety concern at the time
  • The details of other HSW news, developments, proactive initiatives undertaken since the last UHSC (to recognise the HSW achievements of the Divisions/Faculties)
  • Trends identified during Workplace Inspections across Schools/Branches/Divisions/Faculties
  • Status against the School/Branch Traffic Light Reporting criteria.

It should be noted that in consultation with members:
  • The UHSC has the discretion to add/remove/amend the reporting criteria on the UHSC reporting template; and
  • Divisions and Faculties have the discretion to add additional reporting criteria for their Schools/Branches if required.

Each quarter the Executive of the University (i.e. Executive Deans, Vice-President, Deputy Vice-Chancellors) and Head of each School/Branch are required to review and sign off on their respective reports.  Where deficiencies are noted, the Executive and/or Head of School/Branch will take corrective action as appropriate in consultation with the relevant staff.

The completed reports are consolidated for review by the members of the UHSC and Division/Faculty Committees and attached to the Agenda and papers each quarter.  (For reporting purposes, the report from the Division of Services and Resources also includes the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and President and is signed off by the Vice-President, Services and Resources.)
