Roles & Functions
Each Head of School/Branch may appoint (or delegate) specific HSW administrative functions to a Health & Safety Officer (HSO) to assist with the implementation of the University's HSW policy and handbook. The HSO will act as liaison officer between management, health and safety representatives, employees, students, committee members and the HSW Team on health and safety matters. In the role of HSO, the position does not assume any of the manager's or supervisors' responsibilities under the OHSW Legislation.
Functions of the HSO should be negotiated with the Head of School/Branch and may include:
- Assisting with the preparation of School/Branch safety processes to meet the requirements of the HSW Handbook (e.g. safety manuals).
- Assisting with the completion of Risk Assessments for activities, plant and equipment as required.
- Assisting supervisors and health and safety representatives with workplace inspections and accident investigations.
- Assisting to determine appropriate action (e.g. control measures) to address any hazards identified in the School/Branch (e.g. development of safe work procedures, provision of training, provision of personal protective equipment).
- Co-ordinating record keeping for health and safety purposes (e.g. Training Needs Analysis, Training records, Schedule of Programmable Events, entries in RMSS [The University’s records management system], Hazard Registers, Plant Registers).
- Monitoring the provision of information, instruction and training is conducted in accordance with local and University induction requirements.
- Undertaking training in health and safety matters to keep abreast of relevant information and industry and community standards.
- Co-ordinating correspondence, reports (etc) related to HSW on behalf of the Head of School/Branch.
