Planning, Development and Review (PDR)

Planning, Development and Review (PDR)

The Planning, Development and Review process provides mechanisms for aligning goals and objectives and for planning the resources and development required to enable them. The PDR cycle is a four stage process undertaken over a 12 month period. The process is formalised (documented) during Stages 2, 3 and 4, and is supported by a culture of continual improvement whereby regular (informal) performance and development discussions occur.

All staff on continuing and fixed term contracts greater than 12 months are required to participate in the Planning, Development and Review program.

The process aims to help staff and their managers/supervisors to achieve the best results by:

  • Identifying the individual work objectives that are most important in achieving the unit's and the University's strategic goals.
  • Ensuring a sustainable workload.
  • Setting development goals that meet the staff member's job and career goals and which help to provide the University with a highly skilled and flexible workforce.
  • Sharing feedback about achievements and problems so that the staff member and their supervisor/manager can identify and address issues that impede progress.
  • Celebrating, and where appropriate rewarding, achievements.

There are many benefits for staff and managers involved in the PDR process (refer to the GUIDE Planning, Development and Review for a comprehensive list of benefits).

The Planning and Development Review (PDR) process provides a formal framework for discussion between supervisors/managers and staff.

The following guide provides support and guidance at each stage for staff members of the University.

Individual templates are available to guide and record your Planning, Development and Review discussions.

In addition to the above, the following supplementary documents provided further assistance and support.

Supervisors are required to complete a summary of the PDR discussions at the end of each review period.
