Appendix - NHMRC Population Health Career Development Award Level 1 (C) Special

 
1. LEVEL A
 Mar 05

1.1 GENERAL STANDARD

A Level A research-only academic is expected to contribute towards the research effort of the institution and to develop his or her research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to the particular field of research.

1.2 SPECIFIC DUTIES

Specific duties required of a Level A research-only academic may include:

(i) The conduct of research under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently, and the production or contribution to the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research;
(ii) Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise;
(iii) Limited administrative functions primarily connected with the area of research of the academic;
(iv) Development of a limited amount of research related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate guidance from other staff;
(v) Occasional contributions to teaching in relation to his or her research project(s);
(vi) Experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures;
(vii) Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or at departmental and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees;
(viii) Advice within the field of the staff member's research to post-graduate students.

A Level A research-only academic will work with support, guidance and/or direction from staff classified at Level B and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the research academic gains in skill and experience.

1.3 SKILL BASE

A Level A research-only academic will normally have completed 4 years of tertiary study in the relevant discipline or have equivalent qualifications or research experience. In many cases a position at this level will require an honours degree or higher qualifications or equivalent research experience. Research experience may have contributed to or resulted in publications, conference papers, reports or professional or technical contributions which give evidence of research potential.

1.4 ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS

In addition to other matters that affect Level A staff the following measures will be implemented with the establishment of a national unified salary structure:

(a) Any Level A academic who upon appointment holds or during appointment gains a relevant doctoral qualification will be employed at a salary point no lower than the 6th increment of the Level A structure.

(b) The provision in (a) above does not of itself affect the opportunity of research-only academic staff in Level A to move beyond the relevant incremental points without a Ph.D. However, the establishment of the doctoral point at the sixth point of the scale does not imply that accelerated promotion to Level B should be available to staff who, as a consequence of their doctoral qualifications, have been appointed at this point.

(c) Enhanced career structures for research-only Level A staff as provided in this agreement and the new classification standards for this level will allow the opportunity for a greater proportion of appointments at Level A within the industry than at present.

2. LEVEL B
 Mar 05

2.1 GENERAL STANDARD

A Level B research-only academic is expected to carry out independent and/or team research within the field in which he or she is appointed and to carry out activities to develop his or her research expertise relevant to the particular field of research.

2.2 SPECIFIC DUTIES

Specific duties required of a Level B research-only academic may include :

(i) The conduct of research either as a member of a team or independently, and the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research;
(ii) Supervision of research-support staff involved in the staff member's research;
(iii) Guidance in the research effort of junior members of research-only academic staff in his or her research area;
(iv) Contribution to the preparation, or where appropriate individual preparation, of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies;
(v) Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise;
(vi) Administrative functions primarily connected with his or her area of research;
(vii) Occasional contributions in the teaching program within the field of the staff member's research;
(viii) Co-supervision, or where appropriate supervision, of major honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of the staff member's area of research;
(ix) Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or at departmental and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.

2.3 SKILL BASE

A Level B research-only academic will normally have completed a relevant doctoral qualification or have equivalent qualifications or research experience. In addition he or she may be expected to have had post-doctoral research experience which has resulted in publications, conference papers, reports or professional or technical contributions which give evidence of research ability.

3. LEVEL C
 Mar 05

3.1 GENERAL STANDARD

A Level C research-only academic is expected to make independent or original contributions to the research effort within his or her field of expertise and to the organisational unit or inter-disciplinary area of which he or she is a part. An academic at this level is expected to play a major role in research including the exercise of some leadership in research.

3.2 SPECIFIC DUTIES

Specific duties required of a Level C research-only academic may include :

(i) The conduct of research and the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research;
(ii) Supervision of research-support and administrative staff involved in the staff member's research;
(iii) Supervision where appropriate of the research of less senior research-only academic staff;
(iv) Involvement, where appropriate, in the promotion of research links with outside bodies;
(v) Preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies;
(vi) Significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of research teams or management of projects;
(vii) Responsibility for the oversight of financial management of grants received for his or her research projects;
(viii) Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise;
(ix) Occasional contributions to the teaching program within the field of the staff member's research;
(x) Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of the staff member's area of research;
(xi) Various research related administrative functions;
(xii) Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or departmental and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning and committee work.

3.3 SKILL BASE

A Level C research-only academic will normally have a relevant doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing together with subsequent research experience. A position at this level will require a demonstrated strong record of publications, conference papers, reports and/or professional and/or technical contributions in the relevant discipline area.

4. LEVEL D
 Mar 05

4.1 GENERAL STANDARD

A Level D research-only academic is expected to make major original contributions to the research enterprise of the area in which he or she is appointed and to play a significant role within his or her profession or discipline. Academics at this level may be appointed in recognition of marked distinction in their area of research or scholarship.

4.2 SPECIFIC DUTIES

Specific duties required of a Level D research-only academic may include:

(i) The conduct of independent research in which the academic may work as part of a team and the production of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research;
(ii) Supervision of research-support and administrative staff;
(iii) A major role in all aspects of major research projects including management and/or leadership of large research projects or teams;
(iv) Supervision of the research of less senior research-only academic staff;
(v) Promotion of research links with outside bodies;
(vi) Preparation of research proposal submissions to external bodies;
(vii) Responsibility for the oversight of financial management of grants;
(viii) Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise;
(ix) Occasional contributions to the teaching program within the field of the staff member's research;
(x) Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects;
(xi) Higher level research-related administrative functions;
(xii) Some involvement in the development of research policy;
(xiii) Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or departmental and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning and committee work;
(xiv) Significant contribution to the discipline in which the research efforts of the academic are undertaken.

4.3 SKILL BASE

A Level D research-only academic will normally have the same skill base as a Level C research-only academic. In addition, there will be a requirement for academic excellence and outstanding contribution to research.

5. LEVEL E
 Mar 05

5.1 GENERAL STANDARD

A Level E research-only academic is expected to exercise a special responsibility in providing leadership and in fostering excellence in his or her area of research, in the organisational unit, within the institution and within the scholarly and general community.

5.2 SPECIFIC DUTIES

Specific duties required of a Level E research-only academic may include:

(i) Provision of a continuing high level of a personal commitment to and distinguished achievement in a particular area of research or scholarship;
(ii) Fostering the research of other groups and individuals within the organisational unit and more broadly within the institution;
(iii) Development of research policy;
(iv) Preparation of research proposal submissions to external bodies;
(v) Responsibility for the oversight of financial management of grants;
(vi) The conduct of independent research in which the academic may provide leadership within a team and the preparation of conference and seminar papers and publications from that research;
(vii) Supervision of research and administrative staff and other academic staff responsible to the Level E research-only academic;
(viii) Making a distinguished personal contribution to the conduct of research at all levels;
(ix) Management of large research projects or teams;
(x) Developing policy and being involved in administrative matters within the department or other comparable organisational unit and within the institution;
(xi) Participating in community and professional activities related to his or her disciplinary area, including involvement in commercial and industrial sectors where appropriate;
(xii) Involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise;
(xiii) Occasional contributions to the teaching program in the field of the staff member's research;
(xiv) Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects;
(xv) Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or departmental and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning and committee work.

5.3 SKILL BASE

A Level E research-only academic will have the same skill base as a Level D research-only academic but will be recognised as a leading authority in his or her area of research.
