 |
In its quest for excellence in learning and teaching, the University
of Adelaide has adopted the following policy, which requires all new academic
teaching staff to undergo a program of teaching development
| 2. POLICY |
Mar 03
|
 |
2.1 Programs of teaching development will be provided for staff during
the first 3 years of appointment; such programs to be developed in consultation
with the Centre for Learning and Professional
Development (CLPD), Faculties and Departments/ Schools.
2.2 Successful completion of a development program is one of the conditions
for the granting of tenure, unless there are sufficient grounds for exemption
(such as prior completion of equivalent work).
2.3 The workloads of staff undertaking an induction program shall make
allowance for this development activity.
2.4 Teaching Development
Teaching development in this context includes teaching of undergraduate students
and/ or postgraduate students and the supervision of research students. An appropriate
program of teaching development would normally be undertaken in consultation with
the CLPD but other programs may be approved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)
& Provost. These programs could include formal postgraduate awards conducted
by another university, or a program offered within a faculty or department of
the University of Adelaide or another university.
2.5 Equivalent Work
The notion of 'equivalent work' may include, for example, evidence of active and
satisfactory participation in teaching development courses in another university,
completion of a formal award in education (eg. a postgraduate certificate or Master's
degree) or presentation of a portfolio demonstrating effective teaching practice
through extensive and relevant experience in teaching and its development. Staff
exempted from the requirement of paragraph 2.2 may be required, however, to furnish
evidence of attendance at an Introduction to MyUni or a similar training course,
or be able to demonstrate competence in the MyUni (or equivalent) system.
2.6 Prior Experience
In general, 'experience' will be defined as a minimum of four years full-time
equivalent experience as a teacher plus documented evidence of attention to quality
of teaching and learning skills. Student Evaluations of Learning and Teaching
will normally be required.
2.7 Advice and Interpretation
Any new member of the academic staff on probationary tenure should contact the
CLPD as soon as possible to discuss his/her situation. Decisions about the interpretation
of this Policy will be made by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) & Provost
who may grant exemption from the requirement to undertake all or part of a teaching
development program. The reasons for granting exemption will be documented.
2.8 Conditional Award of Tenure
In the event that a staff member is unable to enrol in a Teaching Development
program at the CLPD by virtue of the program being over-subscribed or unavailable,
the staff member's application for tenure need not be delayed but may be granted
subject to attendance at the next available Teaching Development program, completion
of the online version of the Teaching Development program or presentation of a
portfolio demonstrating effective teaching practice and development.
