Procedures for the Award of Attraction/Retention Loadings

Attraction/Retention Loading Policy

  1. Consideration and approval of the loading by area managers
  2. Administration of loading
October 1999

Consideration and approval of the loading by area managers

Heads of academic departments or schools and heads of administrative areas should address the issues listed below when submitting their proposal for a loading to the relevant area manager. Area managers should consider these same points when deciding whether an Attraction/Retention loading is justified:

  1. the need of the area to attract or retain an individual, in terms of the balance between the area's strategic directions and the needs of the individual concerned;
  2. the impact of a decision to grant an attraction/retention loading on the area’s salary budget in terms of flow-on effects to other staff; and
  3. salaries and benefits offered by other universities, relevant agencies and remuneration levels in relevant private sector enterprises and the implications of this on the level of loading to be paid (as a percentage of gross salary excluding the University's contribution to superannuation).

The area manager's decision on the award/non award of the loading is final.

Approved salary loadings will be administered by the Human Resources department.
