Recruitment Timeline Guide

This table provides a guide to the possible timeline of the recruitment process. Please use the Recruitment Timeline/Process checklist to prepare a timeline for your own advertisement.

Pre-recruitment stage (planning) and submit Advertising Request Form (RTA) At discretion of area
From receipt of Advertising Form to advertisement 1-2 weeks (depending on which media and copy dates) (RTA due Thursdays for print the following week)
Application period and closing date 1-4 weeks (Professional best practice is two weeks, Academic may be longer)
Acknowledge applications (usually by email) within 1 week of application closing date
Shortlisting within 1-2 week of application closing date
From shortlising to interview date 1-2 weeks
Interview and other selection methods (eg: Assessment Centres) 1 day (note: It is useful to hold all interviews on the same day), where possible
Referee checks for preferred candidate (usually by phone) immediately following interview and up to 3 days
Make verbal offer 'without prejudice' and negotiate 1 week
Submit signed Appointment Form to Human Resources 2-5 days
From receipt of Appointment Form to issue of contract 1 week
Advice to unsuccessful candidates as soon as possible after interview
Timeline for candidate acceptance of contract up to 2 weeks
TOTAL  (from start to acceptance) up to 18 weeks
