Biography/Background

Professor Fred McDougall is Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Adelaide.

Fred has held the Foundation Chair of Management in the University since 1987. Prior to this appointment, Fred held the Foundation Chair of Accounting at the Flinders University of South Australia. He has also held academic appointments at the University of Melbourne, the University of Glasgow (UK), and Macquarie University, as well as an earlier stint at the University of Adelaide.

In addition, Fred has held visiting appointments at Southampton University (UK), Concordia University (Canada), Universidade Catolica Portuguesa (Portugal), the University of Reading (UK), the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration (Finland), and Texas Christian University (USA). He has acted as External Examiner in Management at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, and External Assessor for the Hong Kong City University.

He served as the first Director of the University’s Adelaide Graduate School of Business (formerly the Graduate School of Management) from 1987-1997 guiding the School to department status in the University, overseeing a tripling in the numbers enrolled in the MBA, the introduction of Executive Development programs, a substantial expansion in the number of staff and development of a close relationship with business and government in South Australia.

Fred was a founding member of the Consortium of Australian Management and Business Schools (CAMBS - now the Australian National Business School), and served as Deputy Chairman for two year as well as chairing the committee that established the Asia Intensive School of Management.

Fred’s research and teaching interests are in the areas of corporate strategy, corporate and international finance, and mergers and acquisitions. He has supervised over 50 MBA research and honours thesis, and five of his students have completed PhD studies under his supervision.

He has published in numerous journals and other publications including Australian Accountant, Accounting and Finance, Abacus, Accounting Education, Management Forum, Accounting Forum, Australian Marketing Researcher, Academy of Management Journal, and Economic Papers. A number of his papers have been reprinted in books of readings, and he has presented papers at numerous conferences in Australia and overseas.

In 2002 he was the Saastamoinen Visiting Professor in the MBA Program at the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

He is a member of a number of academic associations including the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management, the American Finance Association, the Financial Management Association, and the Academy of Management.

Professor McDougall has acted as a consultant to numerous organisations in Australia and overseas, and has served as a director of several companies.
