Secure Bike Storage Facility Guidelines

The environmental and health benefits of cycling are well documented and through the provision of secure parking facilities and other amenities, The University of Adelaide continues to support those staff and students who choose to cycle to and from work. This commitment aligns with the Adelaide City Council's TravelSmart Program and 'Cycling Adelaide' initiatives which are aimed at encouraging and supporting Adelaide CBD workers to cycle to and from work.

The University provides a number of secure storage enclosures for bicycles, together with open-air facilities for parking and securing bicycles. The open-air facilities are freely available to anyone who wishes to use them.

The secure storage enclosures are available free of charge to all staff and students of the University of Adelaide who choose to validate their staff or student identification card with access privileges.

Secure bicycle storage enclosures

There are 3 locations on the North Terrace Campus where staff and students can secure bicycles to parking rails within locked enclosures. These enclosures are identified on the site plan  Bicycle parking locations and can be found in the Napier Underground car park, the southern side of the Barr Smith Lawns and the eastern side of the Barr Smith Library adjacent to the Horace Lamb Building entrance.

Swipe card access to these enclosures is obtained free of charge by presenting your University of Adelaide identification card for activation at Card Services located within the University Contact Centre, Level 4, Wills Building.  Parking spaces are not reserved and are available on a first-come basis.

The University parking facility located at 251 North Terrace (Wilson's Car Park opposite the North Terrace Campus) contains a small number of bicycle parking rails on the ground floor that are available to all staff and students of the University of Adelaide on a first-come basis. Access to this parking facility is controlled by an attendant and it is necessary to confirm your status as a current University of Adelaide student or staff member by showing your identification card to the attendant on arrival.

Bike Theft

Bicycles are a major theft item on campus. To protect your bicycle and reduce the likelihood of its theft, use the following guidelines at all times:

• Use a D lock or other high end security device.
• Lock both wheels and the frame to a bicycle parking rack.
• Do not leave bicycles out overnight or on weekends.
• Lock bicycles in a well lit, well travelled area.
• If working late, think about relocating your bicycle to a bicycle enclosure located on campus. (ref: maps)
• Remove all accessories such as helmet, light, pump, drink bottle etc...
• Keep a copy of the bicycles serial number to aid the identification and recovery in the event of theft.

The University of Adelaide advises that whilst any bicycle is on campus pursuant to the University by-laws, neither the University nor any of its authorised persons are liable for any theft, loss or damage to any bicycle and/or accessories.  If your bicycle is stolen or damaged while on Campus, the matter should immediately be reported to the Police and then to the Security Office.
