Pregnant women need more folic acid
A research study by Prof Alastair MacLennan and Ms Jessica Broadbent, Discipline
of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, has found most pregnant women are not taking
enough folic acid which reduces the risk of spinal cord defects in unborn babies.
Prof Alastair MacLennan said that part of the problem is that some brands of folic
acid supplements don't list the recommended dose in one tablet. Health authorities
in Australia say women should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid per day in
the lead up to conception and in the first three months of being pregnant.

Water music makes waves
Seb Tomczak, Masters student at the Elder
Conservatorium of Music, is making waves around the world with his musical
instrument - he has developed a new form of electronic water music. He makes music
in a bowl of water by firing laser beams through the water at a solar panel. When
the water surface is disturbed, the diffraction changes the output of the solar
panel, with the output fed into an audio device.
