A wonderful underwater world explored
Twenty of the University of Adelaide's Marine
Biology students toured the Port Noarlunga reefs as an introduction to diving.
Gerald Buttfield, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, said staff tried
to get students into the water as soon as possible. "It's a useful way of highlighting
what marine biology is really about - understanding the marine environment, the
effects of what people are doing and trying to get the data that enables us to
reverse some of that or at least to stop it," Mr Buttfield said.

General Information for Staff
Energy Management & Sustainability Update
Staff are reminded that the University of Adelaide is committed to actively managing energy usage and efficiency. The University is becoming more aware of the cost of energy and its efficient use, in particular electricity and natural gas. An Energy Projects Coordinating Group has been established to oversee energy projects across the University. The group has the following broad targets relating to energy:
- Secure reliable electrical energy supply on the best available commercial terms
- Increase the University's knowledge about its use of energy including greenhouse gas emissions
- Reduce the per capita use of energy
- Increase the efficiency with which electrical energy is used
- Minimise transmission costs
- Ensure regulatory compliance
The University has conducted an Energy Audit of all four campuses and the National Wine Centre. The audit identified a comprehensive range of potential energy saving opportunities with an aggregate potential savings of over $1 million. The audit has been used in identifying and prioritising energy management projects including:
Greenhouse Challenge
The Vice-Chancellor & President has approved a recommendation that the University
joins the Commonwealth's Greenhouse Challenge. Apart from providing a focus for
energy use reduction and energy efficiency initiatives, the Greenhouse Challenge
helps members to build their capacity to measure and monitor greenhouse gas emissions.
A Cooperative Agreement between the University and the Commonwealth is being drafted.
Installation of Electricity Metering Equipment
The University has appointed an independent Meter Provider, enabling us to monitor
electricity use at all thirty-six connection points. The University now has the
capacity to continuously monitor energy consumption on an almost real-time basis.
Power Factor Correction - download Case
Study
Power Factor is a measure of the efficiency of connection to the electricity network.
Progressively the University is improving the power factor at a number of its
major connection points. So far it has spent $150,000 in power factor improvement
projects. The total estimated cost to complete appropriate power factor remediation
in 2007 is $150,000.
Control of Room Air-Conditioners - download Case
Study
The University has around 850 wall-mounted room air-conditioners on North Terrace
Campus. Potentially these could consume 10% or more of the University's total
power consumption. This project involves installation of automatic, time-based
control over the individual units. The first phase of this project involves control
of 100 Room Air-Conditioners in the Hughes and Benham buildings at a cost of around
$25,000.
Evolution of Artificial Lighting requirements at the University
- download Case
Study
More than 200 light fittings were installed with new "T5" fluorescent
lamp (high efficiency, low energy) technologies throughout the refurbished areas
of the Physics Building in 2004/05.
Motion and time smart controls are provided for Lighting to Napier
Building Common Teaching Areas - download Case
Study
Building Management System (BMS) Network - download
Case Study
Property Services is investing in the integrated North Terrace Campus BMS Network.
This will result in the coordinated monitoring and control of major electrical
and mechanical services to buildings or clusters of buildings.
HVAC Heat Recovery System - download Case
Study
A new heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC) heat recovery system at the
Medical School South, Laboratory Animal Services Facility will help Property Services
staff and maintenance Service Providers improve their understanding and control
of building HVAC costs and thereby reduce energy consumption.
Water and waste management
A number of initiatives are underway to save water and recycle paper.
For further information or advice, contact Bill Aukett, Energy Procurement and Management Team.

Research Tuesday with Professor Graeme Hugo
What does population change mean for business?
Date: Tuesday
10 April, 5:15pm for 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre, Napier Building (Lower Ground)
Free public seminar.
Professor Graeme Hugo, a Federation Fellow in the School of Social Sciences, provides
insights into what Australian population change means for business and the shifts
in population which will have the greatest impact.
In developing business strategy, population size, composition and distribution
is regarded as a static background. Yet the Australian population is changing
in a myriad of ways, all of which have implications for the evolving demand for
goods and services. Identifying, and especially anticipating, change in population
can prove invaluable to businesses seeking to gain and maintain a competitive
edge.

This presentation will outline several ethical arguments for providing surgeon report cards to patients, and consider how public reporting of surgeon performance can influence surgeon behaviour. 'A Market for Legal Claims? An examination of the Normative and Efficiency Grounds
for Establishing Claim Alienability.'
Date: Monday 26 March, 1:05pm
Venue: Moot Court, Ligertwood Building
Speaker: Dr Vicki Waye, Law School
Traditionally legal claim commodification has been prohibited. However, this
paper considers whether, contrary to current legal convention, claimholders should
be able to sell their claims to litigation entrepreneurs, who are better placed
to aggregate the claims and prosecute them. The paper argues that commodification
is a matter which is largely culturally constructed, and that there are few normative
or economic reasons warranting a ban on claim sale.
