People must cope with less water: expert
Southern Australia has become drier and people will have to learn to live with
much less water, Professor Mike Young said. It is now clear the reliability of
Australia's water supplies has declined, and change in water use is urgently needed.
Professor Young said: "We need to understand that the challenges go beyond the
River Murray and include the southeast and water supply systems for Yorke Peninsula,
Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and the Outback." He said South Australia has
the opportunity to embrace this emerging reality and take a lead as Australia's
"most water savvy State."

Statistical Critique of the International Panel on Climate Change's
work on Climate Change
Speaker: Mr Dennis Trewin, former Australian Statistician and a member of the
Australian State of the Environment Committee.
Date/Time: Wednesday
17 October, 5:45pm for 6:00pm
Venue: Union Hall
Abstract: Climate change is one of the most important issues facing
us today. Many governments have introduced or are developing appropriate policy
interventions to (a) reduce the growth of greenhouse gas emissions in order to
mitigate future climate change, or (b) adapt to future climate change. This important
work deserves a high quality statistical database but there are statistical shortcomings
in the work of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). There has been
very little involvement of qualified statisticians in the very important work
of the IPCC which appears to be scientifically meritorious in most other ways.

An Experiment with an Air Pump
By Shelagh Stephenson
Directed by Geoff Brittain
A play as intriguing as its title
Date/Time: Saturday 13-27 October, 7:30-10:00pm
Venue: Little Theatre
An Experiment with an Air Pump is set in the same house in 1799 and
1999, on the eve of new centuries.
In 1799, the house is alive with the excitement of scientific experimentation,
social change and the whiff of secret romance. In 1999, the brave new world of
science is ethically ambiguous, and the house reveals a chilling secret that dates
from 1799.
An Experiment with an Air Pump is darkly comic, sharply intelligent,
engagingly literate. It provokes and teases in its study of medical ethics, the
role of women and the purposes of science at the dawn of two very different centuries.
Cost: $25; $20 Concession; $15 University of Adelaide staff and students on Tuesday performances.
