Creative industries provide boost to SA

Creative industries like film, music, advertising, software development and visual arts are worth more than $1.2 billion to SA's economy each year and employ more than 25,000 people, a University of Adelaide study has found. Dr Chika Anwanyu, Senior Lecturer in Media, said that creative industries contribute not only to the cultural and social capital of society, but are also increasingly important to the economy. "Previous studies conducted in South Australia have significantly underestimated the size of creative industries by as much as 60 per cent," Dr Anwanyu said. The three-year study (presented to key government, business and artistic leaders) uncovered some important issues facing the state's creative industries - including education and training and professional and financial support - which were all critical to future growth prospects.

Field Geology Club of SA lecture

The Coorong - Past and Present
Speaker: Associate Professor David Paton, Head of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, University of Adelaide

Date/Time: Thursday 13 March 2008, 7:40pm
Venue: Mawson Lecture Theatre, Mawson Laboratories
All welcome.

In the 21st century effectively no Murray water has reached the Mouth. Little wonder that the Mouth threatened to close in 2002. Extended closure would have been disastrous for the Coorong; the fishing industry would have collapsed, the salinities would have jumped rapidly throughout the Coorong, not just the southern half; all of the aquatic food chains would have been destroyed; and the lack of a tidal prism would have rendered the Coorong a poor habitat for migratory sandpipers, even if there was food for the birds. Despite this governments were reluctant to start dredging the Mouth to keep it open. Fortunately they succumbed and more than five years later the dredging continues. The river continues to be without an environmental flow and the Coorong, the barometer for the system as a whole, continues to deteriorate.

The Coorong can be saved but time is rapidly running out to do it. Instead of addressing the symptoms like the closure of the Mouth or the high salinities that now exist across the southern half of the Coorong, we need to address the underlying cause - the ongoing lack of environmental flows.

Enquiries to (the Publicity Officer) Paul Curnow.
The Field Geology Club of SA is associated with the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Australian Institute of Physics FREE Public Lecture

"Antimatter - Does it Matter?"
Speaker: Professor Stephen Buckman, Research Director of the ARC Centre for Antimatter-Matter Studies, The Australian National University.

Date/Time: Thursday 13 March 2008, 7:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus

The mention of antimatter usually conjures up memories of 'warp drives' from Star Trek or of plots to blow up important public landmarks, as in the recent fiction of Dan Brown. It is generally seen as an other-worldly concept which is the domain of boffins and sci-fi enthusiasts. In reality however, while antimatter is relatively rare in our world, it is still much more common than many would believe, and it is assuming an increasingly important role in technology and medicine.

The AIP Bragg awards for 2007 Year 12 Physics students will be presented at this lecture.
