Uni in the News

Fat chaps get a stiff warning

Sex talk could actually help save lives. Telling men what obesity will do to their sex lives has more impact than warnings about heart disease, scientists have discovered. Professor Gary Wittert from the University of Adelaide, Australia, said men often brush off advice that extra weight can lead to cardiac problems. But they shed pounds when they're warned that being overweight can cause impotence. Professor Wittert, Head of School of Medicine, said most men were oblivious to the fact their weight could cause erectile dysfunction, but this link could be the key to fighting the fat epidemic. "It's becoming well known that there are high levels of obesity in Australian men and this has significant consequences for chronic diseases, both physical and psychological," he said.

Ethics Centre of SA - Central Seminar Series

Has the Archbishop of Canterbury opened a can of worms?
The boundaries of religious ethics and secular ethics and law

Presented by: Emeritus Professor Robert Crotty, Director of ECSA

Date/Time: Wednesday 9 April 2008, 4:00-5:00pm
Venue: Scots Centre (next to Scots Church), cnr North Tce and Pulteney St.
FREE public seminar. All welcome.

"Archbishop calls for Islamic law in Britain." This was the special report from London in early February. Archbishop Rowan Williams told BBC radio that this incorporation of Islamic law or sharia could help improve Britain's flagging social cohesion.

This paper will endeavour to establish limits and boundaries for such an enterprise. It maintains that, historically, approaches to secular ethics have been based on differing perspectives on the attainment of order within a cultural system. It will maintain that, likewise, religious ethics are based on approaches to the attainment of ultimate order. Ethical systems, secular and religious, will have commonalities but essentially they are incommensurable. This has ramifications for secular law.

University of Adelaide Theatre Guild & Creative Writing program

First Time Out Season Two
page#1, Scene#1 ... the end and other stories

Dates/Time: 10-12 April, 7:30pm
Venue: Little Theatre, North Terrace Campus
Cost: $15

page #1, Scene#1 ... the end and other stories is the second of two "First Time Out" new work productions in the Theatre Guild's 70th anniversary season.
It is a collaboration between the Theatre Guild and the University's Creative Writing discipline, which began as a small pilot project called Write to Stage - performed at the University's Open Day 2007.
In Write to Stage, a small ensemble of actors took three pieces of new writing by Creative Writing students - a poem, a monologue and part of a short story - and reinterpreted them for performance under the direction of Michael Allen.
The success of that short project inspired the Guild to repeat and extend it for the 2008 season. A range of new material has been added, the show has been expanded in length, and more actors join the group.
This three-night season, directed by Michael Allen, is a quirky and intriguing exploration of where the creative process can lead.
