Uni in the NewsWind turbines set to power homesWind turbines on the roof or in the backyard are set to rival solar panels as a viable source of home energy, according to a group of University of Adelaide students. As part of their Mechanical Engineering honours project, the group of 10 students will design, build and test three types of wind turbines that are cutting edge in technology, aerodynamics and construction. They will be affordable and easy to install. "It would help to take financial pressure off home owners from ever-increasing power bills and it would take some pressure off the state's power grid," said Technical Director, Ashby Allinson-Martin. He said the team expects each turbine to produce a peak 500W of energy. This will be compared with typical domestic usage, looking at quality and consistency of power. Official name for the University of Adelaide Online CommunityThe Development and Alumni office of the University of Adelaide is replacing its existing alumni database with a fully integrated Online Community in 2008. We are pleased to announce the official name of our Community - Adelaide onLION. The inspiration behind the name is the Bonython Hall lion, an icon of the University's tradition and 134-year heritage. Together with the name Adelaide onLION, the lion graphic will be a unique identifying symbol, giving the community a distinctive look and instant familiarity. Early in the implementation process, it was determined that our Online Community required a name that remained consistent with the strong branding of the University, but would give the Community its own identity. As we countdown to the launch of this new and exciting way of engaging alumni, you can keep in touch with the latest information at: www.adelaide.edu.au/alumni/community/. Information for ResearchersCommercial Accelerator SchemeUp to $250,000 research funding provided by Adelaide Research & InnovationThe University of Adelaide aims to put more of its research discoveries on the path to commercialisation with a new $2 million fund for researchers. The fund, launched in August last year by Adelaide Research & Innovation, aims to make more research projects "investment ready". It addresses a recognised gap in funding known as the "valley of death" between traditional research funding and venture capital or other paths to market. Under the Scheme, researchers at the University of Adelaide can receive up to $250,000 per project to establish proof-of-concept or reach a development milestone necessary to attract a commercial partner. The Scheme complements Government schemes already available in South Australia. Through the Commercial Accelerator Scheme we hope to be able to continue to increase the number of successful commercial ventures at the University. Contact your Commercial Development Manager on 8303 5020 for more information:
