Uni in the News

Uni formula may increase pregnancy rates

Pregnancy rates through fertility treatment could be doubled with a new procedure undergoing trials at the University of Adelaide. Researchers from the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology have devised a new formula to significantly improve embryo implantation rates and reduce pregnancy complications in assisted reproductive technology (ART). Early trials involving mice have been encouraging and show the treatment could double pregnancy rates. Associate Professor Claire Roberts has been awarded $294,750 by the Federal Government to demonstrate that the treatment is safe and improves pregnancy outcomes and the postnatal health of babies. If successful, the concept will then proceed to human trials.

Tony Hobbs 1956-2008

Jazz saxophonist, composer, educator and academic Tony Hobbs passed away on 22 April following a sudden heart attack. Tony was a unique individual who shared his musical passion with all willing to listen and touching many lives with his generous humour and love of music. His contribution educating many generations of jazz talent at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane State High School, and especially at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide, where he joined the part-time staff of the Elder Conservatorium as a lecturer in saxophone, leaves a wonderfully rich legacy for the Australian jazz community.

Tristram Cary OAM 1925-2008

Tristram Cary died on April 24, 2008 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, following complications arising from an operation. Dr Cary was internationally recognised as one of the founders of electronic music and a source of inspiration for subsequent generations of musicians working in what has become one of the most important fields of contemporary music. His influence on music was global. Cary was born and educated in the UK, and from the mid 1950s worked full time as a professional composer. His first movie score was for the Ealing comedy The Ladykillers (1955), and he attained lasting fame as the composer of the 'Dalek' theme from the BBC series Dr Who. He founded the electronic music studio at the Royal College of Music in 1967 before emigrating to Adelaide in 1974, where he directed the Electronic Music Studio at the Elder Conservatorium, turning it into the leading facility of its kind in Australia. He retired in 1986, but has remained associated with the University as an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow, composing and publishing widely, and taking the degree of Doctor of Music in 2001. His many awards and honours included an OAM for services to music in 1991, and the Adelaide Critics Circle Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Research Tuesday with Dr Nancy Pollock-Ellwand

From Sodom and Gomorrah to Kath and Kim: Urban reform through the ages
Date: Tuesday 13 May, 5:30pm
Venue: Bonython Hall, University of Adelaide
FREE Public Seminar.

Since ancient times, cities have been perceived as everything from vibrant marketplaces to protective sanctuaries - but one prevalent interpretation has been the city as a place of sin where transgressions occur against all manner of mores. The punishment for these violations has been severe at times as witnessed by the demise of the fabled Sodom and Gomorrah. The urge to reverse urban wickedness has been the great catalyst to urban design through time.

This lecture presents an eclectic survey of ambitious city planning fuelled in equal parts by innovative utopian visions as well as the banal suburban dreams of Kath and Kim. Adelaide's current struggle with sin of an environmental sort concludes the presentation.

Dr Nancy Pollock-Ellwand is the Professor of Landscape Architecture, and Head and Chair of the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. Her research centres on landscape history.
