Brendan's star is on the rise

University of Adelaide graduate Brendan Lim, 23, will soon join the alma mater of former US Presidents — and study at Yale Law School. Winner of a 2008 General Sir John Monash Award, Mr Lim is heading to the US next month to undertake a Masters of Laws, followed by a Doctor of the Science of Law at Yale University. His degrees include a Bachelor of Music (First-class Honours), First-class Honours in Law and he has been awarded the inaugural Most Outstanding Honours Graduate at Elder Conservatorium. "I've met too many people, particularly in the legal profession, who'll say to me that they 'used to' play an instrument and I really don't want to end up in that boat," said Mr Lim, who is a Judge's Associate in the Federal Court in Adelaide while also working professionally as a jazz pianist. "I just want to keep a number of doors open and make decisions as I go," he told the Adelaide* magazine. At Yale, Brendan will examine the role of law in securing stable government.

Night with the Museum lecture

The Field Geology Club of SA and the Royal Society of SA present a lecture titled:

"Stories in Stone: Provenancing Geoarchaeological Artifacts"
Speaker: Dr Suzanne Miller, Director, South Australian Museum

Date/Time: Thursday 12 June, 6:15pm for 7:00pm start
Venue: Mawson Lecture Theatre, Mawson Building, North Terrace Campus
All welcome.

If an archaeologically interesting object is made of stone, geological clues can enable the source of that stone to be determined. Dr Miller's research into such clues and their subsequent unravelling provides a fascinating geoarchaeological detective story, with some surprising results!

Geological surveys of Roman, Pictish and late medieval sculptured stones, from a number of sites across Scotland, form the basis of an ongoing research project to assess the geological make-up of the sculptures and identify possible source areas for raw materials and show a changing pattern of stone procurement over time.

Enquiries to (the Publicity Officer) Paul Curnow, mobile: 0402 079 578.
The Field Geology Club of SA is associated with the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
