Scientist questions solar rebate change

A Federal Government decision to impose a means test on its solar energy rebate has been questioned by Professor Stephen Lincoln from the School of Chemistry and Physics, University of Adelaide. "If you install a solar panel on your roof, after about three years it's generated all the energy which went into making it," he said. Professor Lincoln said with crude oil supplies widely tipped to run out in the next 40 years, Australia must take advantage of its sun exposure for solar power.

Work-life balance at the University of Adelaide

Achieving a healthy work-life balance contributes to the improvement of quality of life and the health and welfare of employees. Alternatively, work-life imbalance can have negative consequences that affect the individual, their family and perhaps the wider community. An opportunity now exists to provide feedback on your views about work-life balance at the University of Adelaide and ways that you believe that work-life balance initiatives could be improved. This involves completion of an anonymous on-line questionnaire, at:
www.psychology.adelaide.edu.au/expts/worklife.html

A trial of the questionnaire showed that it can be completed in as little time as 7 minutes, with the average time of completion being 14 minutes.

The questionnaire is part of an Honours Project in the School of Psychology, University of Adelaide. One of the study's goals is to help inform current work-life balance initiatives at the University, together with making a contribution towards future work-life balance frameworks. For further information on the study, please contact Mardi Webber (Honours Student) on 0417 872 993 or Dr Aspa Sarris (Supervisor) on 8303 6144. For any concerns in regards to the ethics of this request, please contact Dr Paul Delfabbro on 8303 4936.

Night with the Museum lecture

The Field Geology Club of SA and the Royal Society of SA present a lecture titled:

"Stories in Stone: Provenancing Geoarchaeological Artifacts"
Speaker: Dr Suzanne Miller, Director, South Australian Museum

Date/Time: Thursday 12 June, 6:15pm for 7:00pm start
Venue: Mawson Lecture Theatre, Mawson Building, North Terrace Campus
All welcome.

If an archaeologically interesting object is made of stone, geological clues can enable the source of that stone to be determined. Dr Miller's research into such clues and their subsequent unravelling provides a fascinating geoarchaeological detective story, with some surprising results!

Geological surveys of Roman, Pictish and late medieval sculptured stones, from a number of sites across Scotland, form the basis of an ongoing research project to assess the geological make-up of the sculptures and identify possible source areas for raw materials and show a changing pattern of stone procurement over time.

Enquiries to (the Publicity Officer) Paul Curnow, mobile: 0402 079 578.
The Field Geology Club of SA is associated with the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
