$300,000 Grant Rice research
A University of Adelaide scientist has been awarded nearly $300,000 to increase the iron content of rice and other cereal grains. Dr Alex Johnson will work to improve the delivery of iron from the leaf to the seed. "Iron content is quite low in cereal grains because although iron is present in a plant's leaves, very little of that iron is transported to the seed, which is the part that is consumed by humans," he said.

Work-life balance at the University of Adelaide
Achieving a healthy work-life balance contributes to the improvement of quality of life and the health and welfare of employees. Alternatively, work-life imbalance can have negative consequences that affect the individual, their family and perhaps the wider community. An opportunity now exists to provide feedback on your views about work-life balance at the University of Adelaide and ways that you believe that work-life balance initiatives could be improved. This involves completion of an anonymous on-line questionnaire, at: www.psychology.adelaide.edu.au/expts/worklife.html
A trial of the questionnaire showed that it can be completed in as little time as 7 minutes, with the average time of completion being 14 minutes.
The questionnaire is part of an Honours Project in the School of Psychology, University of Adelaide. One of the study's goals is to help inform current work-life balance initiatives at the University, together with making a contribution towards future work-life balance frameworks. For further information on the study, please contact Mardi Webber (Honours Student) on 0417 872 993 or Dr Aspa Sarris (Supervisor) on 8303 6144. For any concerns in regards to the ethics of this request, please contact Dr Paul Delfabbro on 8303 4936.

School of Mathematical Sciences Colloquium Series
Computational Methods for Phase Response Analysis of Circadian Clocks Speaker: Professor Linda Petzold Date/Time: Friday 18 July, 3:10pm Venue: G04, Napier Building All welcome.
Abstract: Circadian clocks govern daily behaviours of organisms in all kingdoms of life. In mammals, the master clock resides in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. It is composed of thousands of neurons, each of which contains a sloppy oscillator - a molecular clock governed by a transcriptional feedback network. Via intercellular signaling, the cell population synchronizes spontaneously, forming a coherent oscillation. This multi-oscillator is then entrained to its environment by the daily light/dark cycle.
