Human simulator robots help University of Adelaide medical students

Human simulator robots that are programmed to breathe, express pain and speak to medical students like actual patients are unveiled at the University of Adelaide's Medical School. The robots, which will help students improve bedside manner and patient diagnosis, are part of the University's new multimillion-dollar medical teaching facility, Bio Skills SA. It is complete with Bio Skills robots, the refurbished Surgical Skills Laboratory and a fully integrated IT and AV system for remote video-conferencing. Professor Justin Beilby, Executive Dean of Health Sciences, said the Bio Skills robots would allow students to make errors without causing harm to patients. "The robots produce lung, heart and bowel sounds, have anatomically correct pulses and respond to medical and pharmacological interventions appropriately," he said.

New feature in MyUni - Online Content

A new database to manage the Library's Digital Resources Management Centre (DRMC) copyright text material is now operational. The new system allows you to place links to copyright material within MyUni using a new drop down tool called Online Content; this tool is readily available inside your MyUni course.

The Centre for Learning and Professional Development (CLPD) is offering information sessions on the changes.

Student Information Technology Satisfaction Survey 2008

ITS is conducting a student satisfaction survey to gather feedback about the IT services provided for students at the University of Adelaide.

Students who complete the survey at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/surveys/its_student_survey.html by Friday 15 August 2008 can enter a draw to win an iPod Nano (8Gb). The winner will be selected randomly from the students who complete the survey. All information provided will be treated as strictly confidential.

Southcott is an Adelaide based photo media artist. She has a Masters in Visual Arts and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Southcott's work has received commendations and awards including an honourable mention in the 2006 Biennial Landscape in the Postmodern in Tampa, Florida and SALA Duckpond Award for photography in 2005. This exhibition is a further development of her ongoing concern about living and working within the urban city environment and of the everyday.

Professor Pascale Quester is Executive Dean of the Faculty of the Professions and Inaugural Professor of Marketing at the University of Adelaide. She has pioneered research in sponsorship effectiveness and is widely published on a variety of consumer behaviour topics.

The evolution of sponsorship in recent times has been remarkable. From a peripheral and relatively small scale marketing communication technique, it has grown into a major marketing strategic tool, particularly for global brands. More often than not, however, its use remains haphazard and its evaluation sketchy. To date, academic research in this area continues to uncover as many questions as it provides answers.

So what is sponsorship and what can it do? Research shows that its value is in creating meanings for consumers and in enabling value-laden relationships to develop between organisations. Examples from the sports and cultural sectors will demonstrate both the power and limitations of sponsorship. Suggestions about how industry and the higher education sector could use sponsorship in a mutually beneficial manner will be provided in conclusion.

Betti's Reciprocal Theorem for Inclusion and Contact Problems

Abstract: Enrico Betti (1823-1892) is recognized in the mathematics community for his pioneering contributions to topology. An equally important contribution is his formulation of the reciprocity theorem applicable to elastic bodies that satisfy the classical equations of linear elasticity... the contribution of Betti is acknowledged for its underlying formal mathematical basis and generality. The purpose of this lecture is to illustrate how Betti's reciprocal theorem can be used to full advantage to develop compact analytical results for certain contact and inclusion problems in the classical theory of elasticity.

Effective Supervision Program, Semester 2

Semester 2 registrations for the Effective Supervision Program are now open. The program is offered every semester, providing a series of five interactive workshops, together with a range of tools, techniques and resources, covering key topics in HDR supervision. The workshops are structured to enable academic staff to work through issues and to share their expertise. The program also offers a pathway to principal supervisor accreditation.

HDR Supervisor Induction Workshop, Tuesday 12 August

All new academic staff wishing to supervise research higher degree students are required to attend the HDR Supervisor Induction Workshop. Led by the PVC Research Operations, this workshop provides an overview of the policy, practice and strategic context of HDR supervision at the University. NEW academic staff are generally not able to undertake HDR supervision, as either principal or co-supervisors, unless they attend this workshop.
