A tribute to Sam Abraham

Malaysian paediatrician Datuk Dr Samuel Abraham contributed generously to the community for years, right up till his death in October 2007 at the age of 78. The late Dr Abraham, a committed social activist and distinguished University of Adelaide alumni, served the Malaysian medical service for over 30 years. He was educated in Kuala Lumpur before receiving a Colombo Plan scholarship to study medicine, and graduated from the University of Adelaide with his MBBS in 1959. To honour Dr Abraham posthumously, its affiliate Lincoln College is renaming Lincoln Hall - where he stayed while studying medicine - after him. Sam was credited with founding the Johor Baru Spastic Centre; co-founding Dignity and Services, an organisation for people with learning disabilities; pioneering the Sentul Project, with medical students providing free care to poor, rural communities; and providing medical aid to children in need.

General Information for Staff

New advertising campaign - 'What's your preference?'

On Monday 1 September the University of Adelaide launches an advertising campaign designed to generate thought, discussion and positive word-of-mouth about our brand in the lead up to the first SATAC application cut-off date of 30 September.

The campaign - comprising billboards, bus shelter advertising, bus interior advertising, high impact press and radio - is themed around the idea of preference: a key word that resonates with our core target market of Year 12 students and their influencers. The objective is to ensure the University of Adelaide is selected by our target market as the preferred institution for study in 2009.

It's important, especially at this time, to recognise the power of word-of-mouth as a marketing tool. With more than 3,000 staff the University of Adelaide has a strong resource of advocates. This can generate a lot of positive-speak which can assist us in reaching our collective goals.

Open Day 08 a huge success

Further to the Vice-Chancellor & President's report, Open Day 08 exceeded all expectations with a record attendance of 14,000.

Information talks also enjoyed outstanding attendance with most auditoriums reaching capacity as prospective students and parents flocked to hear more about specific programs on offer.

The Forum presentation on Water Desalination Plants was revered by those in attendance and all other feedback points to an event that well and truly delivered a fantastic insight into the University of Adelaide.

University Archives Volunteer Group - 5th Birthday Celebration

The University Archives Volunteer Group celebrated its 5th birthday on 1 April. The occasion was marked with a trip to Roseworthy Campus with 33 volunteers and staff taking part. The day not only acknowledged the group's birthday but gave the volunteers an opportunity to tour the campus and see buildings and areas mentioned in the archival records they work with.

During the trip we held a university history quiz to set the scene for the day. Barbara Kidman, our living legend, was a clear winner on the history but all volunteers and staff participated with gusto.

Campus Manager David Forwood supplied a short history of the campus. We viewed the Roseworthy Archives in the Corridor Block and heard some interesting stories about campus life in the period 1958-60 from our Roseworthy Old Collegian volunteers. The Memorial Chapel and a tour of the campus grounds, farm and piggery by Farm Manager John Matheson followed. Stopping at the Art & Heritage Collections Store, Mirna Heruc and Anna Rivett revealed a treasure-trove of heritage items including scientific equipment, furniture, teaching aids and more.

Lunch in the dining room brought back memories for the Roseworthy boys who had their photos taken next to their names on the honour board. Patron of Volunteers Lindsay McWha joined us and presented five year certificates of participation to five original group members - Barbara Kidman, Maureen Keane, Suzanne Layton, Brian O'Donnell and Gloria Parker. Darren Koopman accepted on behalf of the Director of Roseworthy Professor Phil Hynd, a copy of the 'Roseworthy Graduates, 1886-2005' book which was compiled by the Roseworthy subgroup.

We toured the JS Davies Building, Animal Science Laboratories, Callaghan Building, the site of the new Vet School building and the Roseworthy Library.

The University Archives Volunteer Group meets every Tuesday morning from 9:30am-12:30pm with the ROCA subgroup meeting from 1:00pm-4:00pm on Tuesday afternoon.
