Debate on 2020 targets heats up

Electricity and petrol prices will rise as a result of greenhouse emission reduction targets outlined by Professor Ross Garnaut's latest draft report. Scientists and environmental groups, who had hoped the Government's key adviser on climate change would recommend a target of up to 40 per cent by 2020, dismissed the 'weak' 10 per cent target as too low to be effective. University of Adelaide Research Institute for Climate Change and Sustainability Director, Professor Barry Brook, said arguing about "whether we should be aiming for a 10 per cent, 20 per cent or even 90 per cent emissions reduction target by 2020 is pointless and circular. "All of Australia's power needs could be met by a solar thermal array carpeting a 50km square of outback desert," he said. "This is possible, not hypothetical. Encourage the venture capital to invest in proven renewables, and they become quickly much cheaper."
