Uni in the NewsHundreds of new creatures found on Australian reefsMarine scientists have discovered hundreds of new animal species on reefs in Australian waters, including brilliant soft corals and tiny crustaceans, during expeditions run by the Australian node of CReefs.
The Australian researchers conducted three expeditions, one each in the waters off the Great Barrier Reef's Lizard and Heron islands, and one in the Ningaloo Reef on the northwest coast. Thousands of samples were collected by scientists, trying to create an inventory of the vast diversity and abundance of life inhabiting Australia's reef ecosystems.
Researchers plan to explore the three sites annually over the next three years to learn more about soft corals. Source: The Associated Press, Sydney (19 September 2008) Want more Uni news coverage?
