Uni in the News

Hello sunshine!

The dangers of excessive sun exposure are drilled into Australians from an early age. Associate Professor Brendon Coventry, Discipline of Surgery at the University of Adelaide, acknowledges that skin cancer remains an "incredible burden" in Australia, making up 80 per cent of all primary cancers. However sun exposure is a double-edged sword. "Some of the scare campaigns have been so effective that people have avoided the sun's rays completely," he said. "The real truth is that we need some sun for good health, because the sun is necessary for vitamin D production in the skin. Avoiding the sun altogether can lead to vitamin D deficiency and cause osteoporosis, bone fractures and even contribute to other cancers."

2008 Lloyd Cox Memorial Lecture

The University of Adelaide's Research Centre for Reproductive Health presents the following lecture:

'Inhibins and activins in reproduction. Clinical lessons from biological conversations.'
Professor Euan Wallace, Monash University

Date/Time: Thursday 2 October 2008, 5:30pm-6:30pm (Drinks and nibbles prior)
Venue: Queen Victoria Lecture Theatre, Women's and Children's Hospital

Abstract: The transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) superfamily comprises a diverse group of hormones and growth factors that share structural homology. TGF-ß members play key roles at all stages of reproduction from the generation of oocytes and sperm, to preparation of the uterus for pregnancy, development of the early embryo and the placenta, regulation of the maternal responses to pregnancy through to maintaining fetal health and the onset of labour and birth.

In particular, over the past 20 years our group has focused on the roles of inhibins and activins - a distinct group of TGF-ß peptides - in a variety of aspects of human reproduction. Through a series of "in parallel" basic and clinical studies we have sought to explore the functions played by inhibin and activin in male and female fertility, in early pregnancy events, in fetal wellbeing and in parturition. By gaining insights into basic inhibin biology in reproduction, we have strived to develop predictive tests to assist clinical management or to introduce novel clinical therapies. In this lecture I will explore selected aspects of inhibin/activin biology in fertility, pregnancy and birth, highlighting where the understanding of basic biology has led to advances in clinical management. Future applications of inhibins and activins in reproductive medicine will also be discussed.
