Uni in the News
University of Adelaide sets up environmental think-tank
The University of Adelaide will bring together experts in water management, climate change, economics, marine research, energy technology and ancient DNA to tackle Australia's most pressing environmental challenges. The new Environment Institute will be headed by Professor Mike Young who said Australia faced diabolical policy problems in relation to climate change and water resources. "While climate change is the issue of greatest national importance, it is arguable that water is the issue of most interest to South Australia," he said. The Institute will also involve Professor Barry Brook, Professor Alan Cooper, Professor Gus Nathan and Associate Professor David Paton.

New academic leadership positions
The recommendations of the Working Party on Postgraduate Coursework Programs have been endorsed by Academic Board and approved by the Vice-Chancellor & President on behalf of Council for implementation. In order to expand the University's involvement in this area and to facilitate the implementation of the recommendations, the Vice-Chancellor & President has approved the establishment of the position of Dean of Postgraduate Coursework Studies in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic).
The Vice-Chancellor & President has also approved the establishment of the position of Academic Director - Singapore Campus to provide enhanced academic oversight of the University's growing academic activities at this campus.
I am pleased to announce that Professor Iain Reid has been appointed to both positions, dividing his time equally between both roles. Iain has been seconded from his position in the School of Chemistry and Physics for a period of two years. He will take up his new roles in January 2009. Iain has had broad leadership roles in the University, most recently as Acting Executive Dean, Faculty of Sciences, and Acting Head, School of Veterinary Sciences. He was also convener of the Working Party on Postgraduate Coursework Programs.

Upgrade of Exhibition Steps - Early 2009
Infrastructure Branch has recently received engineering advice that it is necessary to temporarily close the Exhibition Steps until upgrade works have been completed. The steps are situated between the Napier Building and the Engineering South Building - map ref H11.
A project has commenced to carry out the necessary upgrade and work is planned to proceed early in 2009.
Unfortunately, the closure of the steps will result in some disruption to pedestrian traffic in the precinct. We regret any inconvenience that students, staff or visitors may experience as a result of the closure.
Attached is a brief article that provides further detail on the steps and the project.
Season for giving
The gift of education takes on a festive theme at the University this month. Staff and students are being encouraged to donate an educational gift for underprivileged children. A Christmas tree 'with a difference' - created by local artist Hans Kreiner - has been erected in the foyer of the Mitchell Building, and is now open for public viewing. Donations of books, puzzles or other educational toys in support of The Smith Family are welcome. The tree will become part of the University's Art Collection.
South Australia Illustrated Gift Cards
The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library and the University of Adelaide's Art & Heritage Collections have produced an elegantly presented folio of eight gift cards, two each of four illustrations from George French Angas' South Australia Illustrated.
Proceeds from the sale of the Gift Cards will be used to promote and support the cultural collections of the University. The cost of a set of eight cards is $20, GST inclusive.
Cards may be purchased by cash at the Barr Smith Library Services desk on Level 3 South, or you can use the order form on the Library website.
