Uni in the News

SA cancer vaccine breakthrough

A South Australian team is working on a multi-purpose vaccine that ultimately aims not only to prevent cancer-causing infections, but to cure the existing ones. Cancer vaccine researcher Associate Professor Brendon Coventry, from the University of Adelaide, said scientists were just beginning to understand the importance of the immune system and vaccines in the prevention and treatment of cancer. He described it as an exciting new field of research. "We're really trying to learn as much as we can about how the immune system works and ways we can teach the immune system to better defend the body against a range of diseases - not just infectious diseases but cancer as well, and possibly heart disease and diabetes," he said.

General Information for Staff

Anzac Day Public Holiday

Please note that Anzac Day falls on a Saturday in 2009. The Anzac Day Public Holiday will also fall on Saturday 25 April, thus the University will be operating as usual on Monday 27 April. Some commercially printed diaries and calendars have incorrectly listed the Monday as a public holiday.

Legal and Risk

The University's legal advisory team, Prudential Services, has been re-named "Legal and Risk" to better explain its role to staff and students. The new title clarifies its role - a team of lawyers, insurance advisors, compliance officers and associated support network who provide professional advice and support to help the University understand its legal obligations, make decisions and plan and implement projects. Legal and Risk is still located in Room G07 in the Mitchell Building and can be contacted on 8303 4539.

University Merchandise goes online

Based on the feedback provided via our recent online survey, Marketing & Strategic Communications is pleased to announce the launch of a new online merchandise catalogue for 2009.

Corporate Express is now our preferred supplier of branded merchandise and we have negotiated competitive prices on all of our products. Please speak with your local area administrator who can place an order on your behalf via the Net Express system. The items will be delivered direct to your area within 2 days and charged to the appropriate dept ID and project code.

We have incorporated items that can be used for various events, such as fillers for show bags and corporate gifts, as well as a limited range in clothing, which includes both ladies and men's sizing. There is also the option to pay by credit card for personal items.

Would you like to have a closer look? Please join us on Level 14, 115 Grenfell Street on Wednesday 18 February, between 12:30pm and 2:30pm or between 3:30pm and 5:00pm to view the University's new merchandise range. Please RSVP to Heidi Todd, stating which session you would like to attend.

Corporate Express will assist with any other merchandise needs that sit outside of the approved range such as one off conference materials. Please call their Promotional Marketing team on 8243 8627. They will provide a competitive quotation for your consideration. Use of the University logo and design of non standard merchandise requires the approval of M&SC.

Please note that the "on-selling" of University merchandise is only permitted if you are an approved retailer. Details of the approved retailers can be found online at: www.adelaide.edu.au/msc/merchandise.

Service Excellence Program - Recruitment Excellence Project

As part of the Recruitment Excellence Program of work, Human Resources in conjunction with Service Excellence Program, is currently undertaking detailed analysis and research into the University's current recruitment practices to inform the development of a Recruitment Excellence framework as outlined in the current Human Resources Strategic Plan.

This framework will support and enhance the recruitment, attraction and retention of people capable of delivering the research and teaching objectives of the University.

Three surveys have been distributed to a variety of stakeholders in the University. Specifically, 'Recent Appointments' to the University, 'Recruiting Stakeholders' and individuals who have left the University in the last 12 months.

The responses to these surveys will greatly influence the recruitment framework implemented by the University of Adelaide. Your responses are highly valued and will form a key component of this program of work.

The administration of the survey process has been outsourced to a third party provider, PKF, to ensure the confidentiality of responses.

If you receive a survey and have any questions about the process, please contact Scott Way, Managing Director PKF on (08) 7421 1400 or Lucy Maynard, Recruitment Services Manager, University of Adelaide on 8303 8006.
