Mums' habits echo down the ages, University of Adelaide finds
What a mother does while she is pregnant can have health consequences for her children up to 30 years later, a study by the University of Adelaide has found. Results of a cross-generational study of over 1000 women aged 30-33 indicate possible links between smoking during pregnancy and obesity and reproductive dysfunction in the next generation. Lead researcher Associate Professor Michael Davies said the study also identified links between maternal obesity and, in their daughters, obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome. Identifying which aspects of health are determined by nature and which are influenced by nurture is "the biggest challenge" the study faces, he said. "There are knock-on effects that can last across generations." This research is part of the work of the University's new Robinson Institute, which will focus on reproductive health and regenerative medicine.

General Information for Staff
University Support for Harmony Day
The Vice-Chancellor and President writes:
The Diverse Australia Program is an Australian Government initiative for dealing with cultural, racial and religious intolerance by promoting respect, fairness and a sense of belonging for everyone. A key event in the program is Harmony Day, celebrated annually on 21 March. Harmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation, and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity.
Since Harmony Day began ten years ago, thousands of schools, community groups and organisations across Australia have hosted Harmony Day events. Many people within the University community are involved in these events, especially those run by schools, and I encourage you to check the website to see what events are on in your area.
One event I am especially happy to promote is the Smith Family's celebration at the Elizabeth Vale Primary School from 11:00am-1:00pm on Friday 20 March. The University's support of the Smith Family's Learning for Life program in the last three years has facilitated access to university for around 200 students who would otherwise face financial barriers to study. The 20 March event will include Multicultural Arts, Multicultural Performers and Multicultural food tastings, and attendees will include the Governor of South Australia and leaders in Federal, State and local Government.
I encourage you to support this event, as I encourage you all to celebrate the cohesive and inclusive nature of our country, and to promote the considerable benefits of cultural diversity within our community.

Vote Earth
Your Light Switch is Your Vote
This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world's first global election, between Earth and global warming.
On Saturday 28 March at 8:30pm, the University of Adelaide will take part in Earth Hour 2009. Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, this is an inspiring event and an opportunity for the University to contribute to the fight against climate change.
By turning off all non-essential lighting for one hour at our locations and facilities across Adelaide, we will join millions of concerned citizens and corporations throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet for future generations.
To help ensure that lights actually do go out on 28 March, we ask all staff to switch off office lights and unplug non-essential equipment before leaving work on Friday 27 March. In addition, we'd like to encourage everyone to participate in Earth Hour by turning off their lights at home during the event.
Australia led the world with Earth Hour. To sign up for the event, visit: www.earthhour.org/signup/.
The University of Adelaide through its Sustainable Adelaide program has committed to managing and improving the environmental impact of our operations. The University has set a number of reduction targets related to water, energy and paper consumption across our campuses.
We're excited about Earth Hour and hope you are too. Don't forget—switch off lights and non-essential equipment when you leave work on Friday 27 March, and switch off at home on Saturday 28 March at 8:30pm!

"Water in Adelaide: understanding the crisis"
Abstract: The current 'water crisis' has assumed a place of prime importance for political and community leaders across the nation, and in the media. Adelaide, in common with all other major population centres south of the Tropics, is subject to water restrictions which are set to continue until substantial rains occur in our local catchments and in those of the Murray-Darling Basin. We are informed that we are experiencing "...the worst drought since records have been kept" or that it is, perhaps, the "once in 1,000 years drought" that has spelt the doom of the River Murray lower lakes. Then there is El Nino and climate change to contend with...
