Sir Douglas Mawson's life celebrated
A century ago this month, famed Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson returned from his first quest to find the South Magnetic Pole.
He helped lay claim to much of Antarctica, explored an area the size of Australia and found radioactive minerals at Radium Hill, the nation's first uranium mine.
In Adelaide scientists, friends, family and a dog-sled team met alongside Mawson's bronze bust on North Terrace to celebrate the centenary of the pioneer's return.
University of Adelaide Pro Vice-Chancellor Rick Russell said Mawson was very popular with students of the day because he was a "very tough individual" and "a true pioneer in every sense."
Sir Douglas Mawson was appointed Professor of Geology and Mineralogy in 1921. Artefacts from his expeditions are among the items displayed in the Tate Museum, Mawson Laboratories.
