Uni in the News
Green energy focus of new research centre
A new research centre established at the University of Adelaide aims to become a world leader in the development of alternative energy technologies as well as cleaner, "greener" combustion.
The new Centre for Energy Technology hopes to make an important contribution to a global reduction in CO2 emissions, through the development of innovative research and technology in partnership with industry.
"In the face of climate change, technological developments will provide important solutions needed by our society to reduce greenhouse gases and other pollutant emissions. New developments are required both to minimise emissions from existing energy systems, and to increase utilisation of alternative energy sources," said the Director of the new Centre, Professor Gus Nathan.
"This new Centre brings together the wide range of expertise from across the University of Adelaide, and provides new capacity for engagement with industry and government agencies, all with the singular focus of supporting the transition to a clean energy future."

Core Business Systems (CBS) Program Website for Staff
The CBS program is a body of work that incorporates the upgrade of the Student Administration system from PeopleSoft v7.6 to Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise v9.0, the implementation of PeopleSoft Human Resources and Global Payroll, and the upgrade of technical infrastructure to support the system. The upgraded system will be known as the Core Business Systems and a detailed website has been created to provide staff with relevant information regarding the program of work and how it will affect all University staff. The site will be updated regularly, so please bookmark the site and visit often to find out the latest information.
PCE Online Enrolment and Payment available!
PCE has achieved the successful implementation of the first Epayment Gateway capability at the University of Adelaide.
This means that anyone interested in taking a PCE course now has the option of enrolling and paying online. This project was a team effort involving PCE, Financial Services, ITS and Marketing & Strategic Communications.

New Web Directory for Business & Community Partners
A new page has been added to the University website bringing together information relevant to business, government and community partners. Access the page through the link 'Business & Community' on the homepage or directly at: www.adelaide.edu.au/collaborate.
The new directory was compiled by the University's 'Smarter Engagement' project team. Requests for updates to the page should be directed to Renee Hakendorf.
Draft Revised Policy for Consultation
Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) Policy
SELT surveys are designed to be an indicator of learning and teaching practices from the student perspective. They are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design. They enable the University to assess how effectively its learning environments and teaching practices facilitate student engagement and learning outcomes. The purpose of this policy is to implement the University's commitment to collecting, analysing and responding to student feedback to improve student learning experiences and outcomes.

Call for Applications for Academic Promotion to Level E
Staff and titleholders wishing to apply for promotion to Level E are now invited to submit their applications.
Promotion is an important way that the University of Adelaide recognizes outstanding performance. We would encourage all staff who believe they meet the relevant promotion criteria to submit an application in 2009.
If you require assistance in determining eligibility, it is suggested you discuss your potential application with your Head of School or Head of Discipline.
A workshop has been scheduled to assist Level D and Level E applicants on Friday 22 May, 12:30pm - 2:30pm, Ira Raymond Room, Barr Smith Library.
Applicants should refer to the Policy, Guidelines and Toolkit, and the appropriate Position Classification Standards when preparing their application.
An application should be made on the approved application form and ONE full printed copy submitted to Lucy Maynard Manager, Recruitment Services by the deadline of Friday 10 July 2009.
No supplementary information will be accepted from applicants after the closing date for applications, unless requested by the University.
Please note that applicants are responsible for contacting their own referees by forwarding their application, the appropriate position classification standard and the form letter requesting that the report be sent to Lucy Maynard, Human Resources Branch, Level 13, 115 Grenfell Street by the deadline of 31 July 2009.

Academic Promotion Workshop - Applicants to Level D or E

Sports Association Needs Your Help!
The Sports Association has provided over a century of service to the University of Adelaide in support of all sport and recreational activities.
The records of the Association document this valuable contribution to the
University community and a project is currently being established to have
them transferred to the University Archives for their ongoing preservation
and management.
Volunteer help is needed to collate, sort, list and rehouse the records
prior to the transfer. University Archives staff will provide guidance
throughout the project. If you have an interest in history and some spare
time to contribute each week, this could be just what you're looking for.

Safe Steps Campaign
Daylight saving has passed and the nights are getting darker as winter approaches. Leaving the campus alone at night can be dangerous and we encourage you to take precautionary actions to ensure you travel safely to your car, bus, train or taxi.
To make sure you get home safely please follow these Safe Steps at all times:
- Follow the most open and well-lit public path.
- Whenever possible, walk with a friend or in a group or contact Security to arrange an escort if you are walking alone after dusk.
- If alone, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings - confidence deters attackers.
- Carry a personal alarm or whistle and be prepared to call for help.
- Avoid undergrowth and be wary of strangers.
- Move your car closer during the day if you are planning on staying on campus after dark.

RUSSLR Conference Announcement
Cultural and Religious Freedom under a bill of rights
Canberra: 13 - 15 August, 2009
The University of Adelaide Research Unit for the Study of Society, Law and Religion (RUSSLR), in conjunction with other local and international institutions, will hold a major conference from 13 - 15 August, 2009 in Canberra, ACT.
The topic, "Cultural and Religious Freedom under a bill of rights", is highly relevant to the current debate in Australia on a bill or charter of rights. The conference will examine the implications for cultural and religious freedom of the proposed bill from the perspectives of legislators and policy makers, religious and community groups, academics and the judiciary. Participants include judges, leading academics, community leaders, theologians and other experts in law and religion from Australasia, America, Asia and Europe.

Talking with Aussies - More Volunteers Needed
The CLPD runs a program to help international students improve their spoken English and learn more about the local culture. The students meet informally with volunteer locals for an hour or so each week and mostly just chat.
Currently there are more students than volunteers available to talk with them, so more volunteers are needed.

Professional & Continuing Education (PCE)
English for Professionals
PCE, through the English Language Centre, offers a 10 week part time course English for Professionals, designed for people from non-English speaking backgrounds who want a successful professional career in Australia. They may be a skilled migrant, a current or past overseas student or working as a professional. The course further develops general language proficiency and focuses on the skills and strategies required to advance in an Australian professional career.

2009 SA Science Excellence Awards
The SA Government supports the South Australian Science Excellence Awards as a means to highlight the diversity of scientific research in this State, and facilitate a better understanding of the ways in which research is linked to the development of new technologies and products.
Researchers from the University of Adelaide are encouraged to nominate for these prestigious awards.
Awards will be presented in the following categories:

One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $50,000.
