Uni in the News
Electronic stability is compulsory
A requirement for compulsory electronic stability control on all new passenger vehicles sold from November 2011 is being hailed as the most significant road safety initiative since installation of seatbelts became law. Electronic stability control uses sensors that compare the car's course with the driver's steering wheel action, or where the car is going compared with where the driver wants it to go. A computer selectively applies braking to individual wheels to help bring the car back to the intended course. Dr Robert Anderson, deputy director of the Centre for Automotive Safety Research at the University of Adelaide, welcomed the move, saying "we are looking to a significant reduction in crashes". Dr Anderson said only seven per cent of registered vehicles on SA roads had stability control.

ALTC Discipline Scholars role for senior academics
As part of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council's Learning Networks program, ALTC will be appointing Discipline Scholars across the following disciplines: Law; Science, Engineering and Technology; Architecture and Building; Business, Management and Economics; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Creative and Performing Arts; Health, Medicine and Veterinary Science; and Education and Human Service Professions.
The role of discipline scholars is to further the learning and teaching agenda within their discipline across Australia and internationally, as well as to publicise work already completed under ALTC-funded projects. They also investigate current and emerging trends within their field.
Ideally, candidates will be senior academics who already have strong links across their disciplines with a strong commitment to learning and teaching. Opportunities exist for the roles to be taken up in a part-time capacity. More information about the program and current scholars can be found at: www.altc.edu.au/supporting-discipline-networks.
The first three discipline scholars were appointed for the Engineering and Technology and Business, Management and Economics disciplines last month. The next four discipline groupings to be targeted are Architecture and Building; Creative and Performing Arts; Health, Medicine and Veterinary Science; and Science. Work is expected to begin in January 2010 and expressions of interest for these positions close on 2 October 2009.

Research Tuesdays
Rising to Global Power
How Australia could supply the whole world's energy needs
Presented by Professor Derek Abbott, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Date/Time: Tuesday 14 July 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Napier 102 Lecture Theatre, Napier Building, University of Adelaide
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: Future energy supply is a major global problem. Although no-one knows exactly when oil production will cease, its days are undoubtedly numbered and its environmental shortcomings well recognised.
Clearly, however, any alternatives that involve extracting resources from the earth will be similarly unsustainable, at best only temporarily deferring the problem. So where does the answer lie?
According to the University of Adelaide's Professor Derek Abbott, it could be right here in Australia.
In this exciting presentation, he examines the question of how - by expanding our vision to consider energy supply on a massive scale - an Australian collaboration between electrical engineers, economists and chemical engineers could potentially power the entire world.
