Uni in the NewsPlatypus helps unlock cancer mysteryResearchers at the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital believe the link between human and platypus could now be the key to understanding ovarian cancer. DNA mapping of the platypus has uncovered a link between their sex chromosomes and DNA sequences found in ovarian cancer. ARC Australian Research Fellow in Genetics, Professor Frank Grützner, said they identified where DNA sits on the sex chromosomes on platypus and where DNA sits on the human genome is similar. "Through this we can trace the changes in DNA. Cancer can cause a lot of DNA to be amplified and a lot to be missing. The research helps narrow down and identify the region that we need to look at to understand the disease," he said. Source: The Independent Weekly (27 June 2009) Want more Uni news coverage?
