Uni in the News

Platypus helps unlock cancer mystery

Researchers at the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital believe the link between human and platypus could now be the key to understanding ovarian cancer. DNA mapping of the platypus has uncovered a link between their sex chromosomes and DNA sequences found in ovarian cancer. ARC Australian Research Fellow in Genetics, Professor Frank Grützner, said they identified where DNA sits on the sex chromosomes on platypus and where DNA sits on the human genome is similar. "Through this we can trace the changes in DNA. Cancer can cause a lot of DNA to be amplified and a lot to be missing. The research helps narrow down and identify the region that we need to look at to understand the disease," he said.

VideoTrace wins a Finals place

Professor Anton van den Hengel from the School of Computer Science has won the People's Choice Award at an international competition to find "the next big thing".
Anton led a team of researchers at the University's Australian Centre for Visual Technologies in developing world-first software called VideoTrace to create accurate 3D models from video. He was one of 25 finalists in the International Next Big Thing Award which attracted 300 entries from around the world.
The competition is run by Innovic, a not-for-profit organisation which assists more than 1800 innovators each year, helping to turn new ideas, inventions and technology into viable products and new businesses.

Gastro researcher takes out major Award

A/Prof Christine Feinle-Bisset, an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow based in the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide, has recently received a prestigious international research award. At an award ceremony, taking place at the Annual Meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association in Chicago, USA, in early June, A/Prof Feinle-Bisset received a Masters Award in Gastroenterology, consisting of US$7,500 and a hand-crafted glass trophy, to honour her outstanding contributions to clinical digestive sciences. The award, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of gastroenterology, recognises her work on the gastrointestinal regulation of appetite in humans. A/Prof Feinle-Bisset is recognised internationally for her innovative research characterising interactions of dietary nutrients with gastrointestinal motor and hormonal functions to regulate appetite and energy intake in healthy humans, changes that occur in obesity, as well as mechanisms underlying the generation of digestive symptoms in functional dyspepsia.

Call for Applications for the Equity and Diversity Grants Scheme

The Equity and Diversity Grants Scheme is an initiative of the Gender, Equity and Diversity Committee, a sub committee of the Vice-Chancellor's Committee. The Scheme provides seed funding of up to $5,000 for new and innovative strategies that enhance equity and diversity for students and staff at the University.

The Equity and Diversity Grants Scheme Working Party, convened by Dr Margaret O'Hea welcomes applications from staff across the University.

The closing date for applications is Friday 28 August 2009.

Go8 scholarships for University of L'Aquila, Italy

Call for Adelaide research staff to host a L'Aquila researcher

The Group of Eight will offer up to eight scholarships to early career researchers in the Italian city of L'Aquila to help them continue their research in Australia while the University of L'Aquila is rebuilt after the April 2009 earthquake. The Association for Research between Italy and Australasia (ARIA) is coordinating the selection process for the scholarships of $5000 each - approved by the Go8 Vice-Chancellors. The University of Adelaide, through President of ARIA-SA Antonio Dottore, aims to attract one or more eligible PhD students or early career researchers to conduct research at our centres & units.

Olympic Dam Expansion - Public Lecture

The Field Geology Club of SA presents a lecture on:

Olympic Dam Expansion
By Steve Green, Sustainability Manager, BHP Billiton.

This presentation will provide an overview of the proposed expansion of mining operations at Olympic Dam, with some details on the geology. Should the proposed expansion be approved and proceed, it would see the development of open pit mining in addition to the existing underground mine and would become one of the largest and most complex projects in the world.

Refugee Camp In Your City

Replica camp to bring refugee life close to home

Dates/Time: Sunday 20 - 27 September 2009, 9:00am - 5:00pm (last tour)
Location: Victoria Square, Adelaide

Médecins Sans Frontières Australia - Doctors Without Borders - will be bringing Refugee Camp In Your City to Adelaide. This is a great opportunity for students at the University of Adelaide to speak to experienced field staff and get a taste of what life would be like as a doctor or nurse with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

The 1000 square-metre replica camp will give people the rare chance to walk into a camp site modelled on refugee camps in countries such as Chad and Sudan.

Experienced field staff will be on-hand at the camp to lead the guided tours and tell their stories about refugee camp life and the vulnerability of life for people who have fled their homes.

MSF staff will also be available to talk to people interested in working for Médecins Sans Frontières at an Information Night held in Adelaide on Wednesday 23 September.

French Studies Symposium

"Discovery and Empire: the French in the South Seas"
Date: Wednesday 8 July
Venue: State Library of South Australia

Papers will cover the extended period commonly referred to as the Age of Discovery, from the early 16th century voyage of the Abbé Paulmier through to the scientific voyages of the first part of the 19th century. The day will end with a FREE Public Lecture in the Pacific Cultures Gallery of the SA Museum, to be given by Professor John Gascoigne (UNSW), on the topic "The Globe Encompassed: Pacific Convergences in the Age of the Enlightenment" from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.

The symposium is one of the strands of the XVIIth Biennial Conference of the Australasian Association of European Historians.

Governance
This workshop explains the governance of the University. The University's governing body is Council, it is chaired by the Chancellor and is advised by several standing committees. Audience: Managers and staff who want to gain a broad appreciation of how the University functions and its legislative obligations.

Planning, Development and Review (PDR) - Program for Managers & Supervisors
Performance management can be viewed from two sides. On one side it is process of development, two-way communication, encouragement and motivation - processes that focus on the employee as people. On the other, it is the process of aligning work objectives, monitoring and assessing employee contribution, and providing feedback - processes that focus on employees as resources and enablers of organisational goals. This program aims to assist managers in addressing both sides.
Audience: Managers and Supervisors who have responsibility for the management of the performance and outcomes of staff that report directly to them.

ERGA Conference 2009: Feedback and Flexible Learning

Our keynote speakers this year will be Professor Marcia Devlin, Chair in Higher Education Research, Deakin University, and Professor Susan Jones, Head of Zoology, University of Tasmania.

Proposals are invited for workshop and panel sessions, and abstracts and papers for concurrent sessions. Submissions are due on 31 July 2009.

Future Research Leaders Program

The Future Research Leaders program has been developed collaboratively by the Go8 universities, and is delivered in full each semester for the benefit of the research community of the University of Adelaide. The program is aimed at current and aspiring research leaders, and seeks to build a range of skills and knowledge critical to successful research leadership and management.

There are eight modules in the program, together with a researcher orientation module. Modules are undertaken by a combination of online study, independent research and a face-to-face workshop. Do just one module, or do as many as you like. "It's up to you. And it's all free!"

Exploring Supervision Program

The Exploring Supervision program (formerly the Effective Supervision program) provides professional development for HDR supervisors. Each semester we present a series of three interactive workshops, together with a range of tools, techniques and resources, covering key topics in HDR supervision. In addition, completion of the full module of the program leads to registration as a principal HDR supervisor.
