Uni in the NewsReplant trees and save city's birdlifeHalf of Adelaide's native birds are threatened with extinction unless swift planning gets under way and more funding is provided to restore woodlands, Associate Professor David Paton warns. The University of Adelaide ecologist said as little as 10 per cent of the original habitat of the Adelaide region remained as urban development took over, much of it on good-quality soils, leaving poorer quality areas struggling to support vegetation. He said it would take at least 30 years for woodlands to start to take shape and about 100 years to re-establish a functioning habitat system that could adapt to changes in climate, so moves needed to start now. A/Prof David Paton outlined the needs of local bird species at August's Research Tuesday Public Seminar. Source: The Advertiser (11 August 2009) Want more Uni news coverage? Change to administration for Offers of Casual EmploymentOne of the key objectives outlined in the University's Human Resources Strategic Plan 2008-2009 is to transform Human Resources service delivery to the University community. As part of this transformation effort an opportunity now exists for the University to implement a more robust process around managing our casual staff workforce that will meet compliance requirements identified through recent audit processes. Currently, Offers of Casual Employment are held locally within Faculties/Schools/Divisions/Branches and are not usually sighted by Human Resources. In some instances, these Offers along with the casual payment forms (timesheets) are being signed by staff who do not have the delegated authority to make an offer or authorise payment. For every current casual employee, working on or after 31 August 2009, Human Resources will require an original signed Offer of Casual Employment. This is to ensure that a University casual staff member is paid according to the duties they have been engaged to perform within a specified work period. More detail on this change to administration for Offers of Casual Employment including templates and instructions on this process are available from: www.adelaide.edu.au/hr/conditions/salary/casual_emp_instruct.html. In, addition templates for Casual Payment Claim Forms (currently known as timesheets) have been updated with effect immediately. For further information, please contact the HR Service Centre at: hrservicecentre@adelaide.edu.au or phone 8313 1111.

Asian Studies Workshop Series 'Thinking about Asia'Workshop 2: The Structure of the Forced Labour System in Wartime Nagasaki, Japan During World War II, Nagasaki was one of a number of cities in Japan where crucial war production was conducted. The system had three major components: labourers (non-forced wage, and forced); private companies; and government operations largely under military control. Nagasaki was the last intact operation of this system in Japan until the atomic bombing in August 1945. The forced labour system involved Koreans and Allied POWs, who lived in confined dormitories, and who worked for Mitsubishi's production plants and shipyard, as well as in massive underground production and storage facilities run by the military. This workshop is a case study that investigates how this system was structured. Answers to these key questions lead directly to a comparison with a similar wartime labour system in the Third Reich. Ethics Centre of SA - Central Seminar SeriesDonation of Human Embryos to Stem Cell research: a view from the UK Synopsis: Tissue donation in the reproductive setting raises unusual and in some respects unique issues for patients, professionals and regulators. These become more complex when, for example, IVF patients are asked to consider donating 'spare' or 'surplus' embryos to stem cell research, since any hES lines derived from their embryos are potentially immortal. Although the UK has devised consent procedures specific to this context of donation, many issues remain unresolved and are the subject of ongoing discussion, including conditional consent, donor screening, and feedback to patients. This presentation addresses these and other issues from an anthropological perspective that attempts also to engage with wider questions of the changing 'reproductive value' of human embryos now that they are increasingly used for regenerative purposes. Richard IIBy William Shakespeare Shakespeare's Richard II is the first play in a series about the nature of kingship that includes Henry IV (Parts I and II), and Henry V. In the medieval understanding there is an intimate connection between Ruler and Realm. The "king's body" is both personal and political, and to make war on the King is to make war on the Country. But if the King's actions are harmful to the Country, how should the loyal patriot behave? And if the King is subdued and forced to rule for the good of others, in what sense is he still the King? The struggle at the heart of Richard II - between Richard II and his cousin Henry Bolingbroke - is thus more than an armed conflict. It is a fundamental clash between the right of the king to rule and the right of the kingdom to be ruled well. The play is also about the moving journey the self-centred Richard makes towards self-knowledge, as his political fall opens the door to personal wisdom. Cast: Graham Self as King Richard II, Russell Slater as Bolingbroke (the future Henry IV) and John Edge as John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, with Mollie Birch, Eleanor Boyd, Geoff Brougham, Anita Canala, Brett Carruthers, Joshua Coldwell, Geoff Dawes, John Dexter, Georgia Dodd, Matthew Dowdall, Rowena Garcia, Marieka Hambledon, Peter Kentish, Keith Manson, David Mitchell, Blake Parham, Bronwyn Ruciak and Anna Taylor.
