City to Bay - Sunday 20 September 2009
Are you registered to participate in this year's City-Bay Fun Run?
Or are you interested in participating but need a little more encouragement?
If you answered 'yes' to either of these questions the HSW Team would like to hear from you!
University of Adelaide staff who walk or run in this year's City-Bay will be eligible to go into the draw to win some fantastic prizes - courtesy of the Healthy University Wellbeing program.
More information will be provided in the coming weeks, but participants will be encouraged to contact the HSW team after the event with details of their registration and participation in order to go into the draw. There will be two categories:
- First Time Participant
- Veteran
If you are yet to register and are interested in walking as part of a group (participation rather than performance being our mantra), register with www.city-bay.org.au and then contact Louise Dunn (HSW Specialist, Injury Management & Wellbeing) and we will try to form some groups in the required categories.
Bike Maintenance Courses
In the lead up to National Ride to Work Day 2009, the University's environmental management program, Sustainable Adelaide, will be subsidising a series of Bike Maintenance Courses to be run by BicycleSA.
Learn to maintain your bike with a basic course, or build your bike maintenance skills with an intermediate course. The courses will run twice daily, between Tuesday 29 September and Thursday 1 October 2009.
As well as being good fun, cycling is a fantastic way to improve health and wellbeing, reduce carbon emissions, save money and beat traffic congestion. To find out more information and register your interest for a bike maintenance course, visit the Sustainable Adelaide website.
Please be quick as classes will fill up quickly!
Student Grievance Resolution Process
A Web-based Student Grievance Resolution Process is being developed, to replace the current Student Complaints Policy and Fair Treatment Procedures for Students. It will enable students and staff easily to identify the 4 stages in resolving a grievance, and be taken step by step through the process.
The stages are:
Stage 1: informal discussion
Stage 2: formal review
Stage 3: appeal (to the University's Student Grievance and Appeal Committee)
Stage 4: external review or appeal.
The process does not differ significantly from the current process as set out in the Student Complaints Policy, which by and large has worked well over the years, supported by the Student Policy and Appeals Office. It is more the presentation that has changed.
The process has been designed to be consistent with the principles of Procedural Fairness and the University's legal obligations. The emphasis is on informal resolution as soon as the grievance arises (Stage 1). Where this does not work, more formal procedures are implemented. As each stage becomes more formal, so too do the procedures.
While the process has a student focus, it is designed also to be the main reference point for staff who are asked to deal with a grievance. It sets out the timelines in which staff must respond to Stage 1 or Stage 2 grievances. It also sets out the Rights and Responsibilities of both staff and students for each stage of the grievance process.
The draft is available at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/student/grievance/ [UA staff only]
Feedback and responses can be directed to Dr Peter Backhouse, Coordinator, Student Policy and Appeals or comments can be made to: policies@adelaide.edu.au.
New Policies
"Brand and Visual Identity Policy"
At its meeting on 17 August, the University Council approved the new Brand and Visual Identity Policy, which supersedes the
Trade Mark and Brand Assets Policy.
The purpose of the Brand and Visual Identity Policy is to ensure the University benefits from the consistent and coherent promotion
of the University's brand and to minimise risk from the misuse of the brand. An application form for the use of a University Brand
Asset or Trademark is included.
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/680/
"Responsible Conduct of Research Policy"
At its meeting on 5 August, Academic Board endorsed the "Responsible Conduct of Research Policy". The Vice-Chancellor and President
approved the new policy, on behalf of Council, on 14 August 2009.
The Responsible Conduct of Research Policy formally adopts the principles embodied in the Australian Code for the Responsible
Conduct of Research [the Code] and needs to be read in conjunction with the Code:
www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/r39syn.htm. This Policy is predicated on the principle that researchers associated
with the University are committed to high standards of professional conduct, and that they will ensure their work enhances the good
name of the University and the profession to which they belong. Like the Code it adopts, the Policy simply formalises principles
that naturally flow from such a commitment to excellence.

Draft Proposal - For Consultation
"Revocation of Leave of Absence Policy"
The University introduced a Student Leave of Absence Policy in December 2005, with the stated aim of enabling the University 'to
better manage student load in response to provisions of the Higher Education Support Act'.
The policy requires coursework students to apply for leave of absence from their program if they intend to take a break from their
studies for any reason. Students are required to complete a paper-based application form, which must be approved and signed by a
Faculty officer, who then puts a Leave of Absence row on the Program Record in the Student System. There is no longer a need for a
University-wide policy of this nature, and it is proposed that it be revoked.
The consultation period ends on 7 September 2009.

Ethics for Everyone
The ethical requirements that apply to groups, and what they mean for us as individuals
Presented by Professor Garrett Cullity, Hughes Professor of Philosophy
Date/Time: Tuesday 8 September 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre G04, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: Whoever we are, many of the ethical decisions we face apply to the actions we take as part of a group.
For example, we must consider the nature of our responsibilities to the environment, the underprivileged and groups previously wronged. There are even ethical components to the choice of products we buy.
So what determines whether our actions are right or wrong? Which groups, ethically speaking, do we actually belong to? And if a group is neglecting its responsibilities, how should we respond as individuals?
In this provocative presentation, the University of Adelaide's Professor Garrett Cullity tackles these challenging questions, examines the complex puzzles they give rise to and offers some answers.

Date/Time: Thursday 10 September 2009, 7:45pm
Venue: Mawson Lecture Theatre, Mawson Laboratories (near corner of Victoria Drive and Frome Road)
Climatic and environmental changes have played a significant role in the history of humanity. Many anthropologists suggest that such crises challenged us and made us more innovative and creative. This lecture will provide examples, including: the explosion of the super volcano Toba about 73,000 years ago, which almost extinguished the whole human race; changes in the Sahara that saw a wet paradise progressively drying up, the explosion of Santorini in the eastern Mediterranean that was associated with the destruction of the Minoan civilisation in Crete; and the climate change associated with the rise and fall of the great Tang Dynasty in China and the Mayan civilisation of Central America.
Visitors are warmly invited to attend. For further details contact Margaret Visciglio on 8265 0544 or Paul Curnow on 0402 079 578.

Research Assessment: Encouraging Excellence or Undermining Quality? Lessons from the British Experience
Speaker: Professor John Scott, The University of Plymouth (UK)
Date/Time: Tuesday 15 September 2009, 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Venue: Napier LG23, Napier Building, University of Adelaide
Research Assessment, pioneered in the UK, has become a global trend, advocated by Governments as a means to improve the quality of research and encourage a framework of excellence. Funding decisions are increasingly tied to decisions made by assessment panels and to measures of performance. What are the consequences of this for academic careers and publication? The lecture will draw on experience from participation in two Research Assessment Exercises and participation in the planning of a new Research Excellence Framework to consider how academics in Britain and Australia should respond to these developments.

Ethics Centre of SA - Central Seminar Series
Donation of Human Embryos to Stem Cell research: a view from the UK
Presented by Sarah Franklin, Professor of Social Studies of Biomedicine & Associate Director, BIOS Centre, London School of Economics
Date/Time: Thursday 3 September 2009, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Venue: Scots Centre (next to Scots Church), cnr North Terrace & Pulteney St, Adelaide
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: Tissue donation in the reproductive setting raises unusual and in some respects unique issues
for patients, professionals and regulators. These become more complex when, for example, IVF
patients are asked to consider donating 'spare' or 'surplus' embryos to stem cell research, since
any hES lines derived from their embryos are potentially immortal. Although the UK has devised
consent procedures specific to this context of donation, many issues remain unresolved and are
the subject of ongoing discussion, including conditional consent, donor screening, and feedback
to patients. This presentation addresses these and other issues from an anthropological
perspective that attempts also to engage with wider questions of the changing 'reproductive
value' of human embryos now that they are increasingly used for regenerative purposes.

Study of retaining Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students into academia: facilitators and barriers
The Human Resources branch of the University has provided a grant for a survey to identify some of the factors that are relevant to HDR students when they consider their professional careers. Current HDR students who have some proportion of their enrolment in either the Faculty of Sciences or the Faculty of Health Sciences are invited to complete this survey. It will take between 10 - 20 minutes to complete and you will go into a draw to win an iPod Shuffle.
To complete the study, please visit: http://snipurl.com/hdrsurvey before 8 September.
Attention: Academic and Research Staff
Higher Degree by Research Students
Group of Eight Librarians: Survey of information resources
I am pleased to invite you to participate in a cost-benefit study aimed at assessing the value for academic communities of information resources made available to them by the University of Adelaide.
The libraries of the Australian Group of Eight (Go8) universities (www.go8.edu.au) have commissioned Outsell, Inc (www.outsellinc.com) to carry out the online survey, which is being conducted at three universities - The University of Adelaide, The Australian National University and The University of Queensland.
In particular, the Go8 Librarians are interested in obtaining feedback from researchers and teachers concerning:
- the 'investment' in terms of money and time which researchers/teachers currently make in using information resources;
- the cost which researchers/teachers would have to incur in terms of direct financial cost and time spent if information resources were not made available free at the point of use by their universities;
- qualitative judgments of the benefit/value to researchers/teachers of the information resources.
I would be pleased if you would take a few moments from your busy research and teaching schedule to participate in this important survey - it should take you about 15 minutes to complete online. Your input and perspective as a researcher/teacher are extremely important in providing responses which will help to influence the future of information provision for research in the Go8 universities.
A summary of the aggregated results of the survey for each institution will be available to members of the research community (from December 2009).
The Library, with generous support from UniBooks, is making available ten book vouchers (value of $100 each) for a draw after the conclusion of the survey period. All respondents to the survey will be included in the draw - but the survey responses will remain anonymous.
Also, if you are prepared to be involved in a follow-up interview, or focus group, please indicate in the appropriate place on the survey.
For further information, or if you have difficulty accessing the survey, contact me directly at: ray.choate@adelaide.edu.au or if you have any concerns or questions about this online survey, you can also contact David Powell, Director & Senior Consultant, Outsell UK: dpowell@outsellinc.com.
To participate in the survey, please visit: www.digisurvey.com/adelaide
Thank you
