Uni in the News

Hunt for proteins to switch off MS

Scientists hope new research into the causes of multiple sclerosis, focusing on proteins and the role they play in the development of the disease, will lead to more effective treatments and better diagnosis. Launched at the University of Adelaide, the research collaboration - consisting of three Group of Eight universities (Adelaide, Monash, Queensland) and WA's Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital - aims to discover the proteins that cause the debilitating disease, which affects about 20,000 Australians and costs the community about $2 billion a year. Lead investigator Professor Shaun McColl, Deputy Head of the School of Molecular & Biomedical Science, said there were currently no effective cures or therapies for multiple sclerosis, a disease that causes the body's own immune cells to attack the central nervous system. "With MS there are a number of major stages that occur in the disease, including activation and remission," Professor McColl said. At each of the major stages certain genes were activated, expressing proteins that researchers believe could have the effect of switching the disease on and off.

The Advertiser – University of Adelaide lift-out, 5 September

On Saturday 5 September we published a 16-page insert in the statewide issue of The Advertiser. This publication was aimed at parents and influencers of SA school leavers. With SATAC's initial application deadline of late September, school leavers (who make up 79% of our student population) are seeking advice and guidance on which university to choose and which academic program is best for them. Positive reinforcement of our brand by parents and influences is therefore important for this group at this time.

Market research into the parents and influencers segment told us brand-barriers for some parents were the perception that we're "inaccessible", "unfriendly" and potentially 'not as market and job-relevant' as our competition. We sought to combat this negative perception by highlighting truths around our great student services team, our student assistance programs and industry links which secure graduate jobs.

Identified as important in the consideration set of parents was: quality infrastructure, student services and quality teaching. These aspects were addressed in the insert also.

All stories were told through real people.

For those staff who missed Saturday's The Advertiser, copies of the insert can be obtained by contacting Jason, Jit or Angela at the Prospective Students Office.

Virtual Tours – New online tour

The Marketing and Strategic Communications branch has launched a brand new interactive, online Virtual Tour of both the North Terrace Campus and The Village student accommodation.

This will be particularly useful to international and outer-metro prospective students who can now experience our majestic campus through our website.

The tours are user-driven providing an interactive and engaging experience for our students and staff.

Student Grievance Resolution Process

A Web-based Student Grievance Resolution Process is being developed, to replace the current Student Complaints Policy and Fair Treatment Procedures for Students. It will enable students and staff easily to identify the 4 stages in resolving a grievance, and be taken step by step through the process.

The stages are:
Stage 1: informal discussion
Stage 2: formal review
Stage 3: appeal (to the University's Student Grievance and Appeal Committee)
Stage 4: external review or appeal.

The process does not differ significantly from the current process as set out in the Student Complaints Policy, which by and large has worked well over the years, supported by the Student Policy and Appeals Office. It is more the presentation that has changed.
The process has been designed to be consistent with the principles of Procedural Fairness and the University's legal obligations. The emphasis is on informal resolution as soon as the grievance arises (Stage 1). Where this does not work, more formal procedures are implemented. As each stage becomes more formal, so too do the procedures.
While the process has a student focus, it is designed also to be the main reference point for staff who are asked to deal with a grievance. It sets out the timelines in which staff must respond to Stage 1 or Stage 2 grievances. It also sets out the Rights and Responsibilities of both staff and students for each stage of the grievance process.

The draft is available at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/student/grievance/ [UA staff only].

Consultation period ends 21 September. Feedback and responses can be directed to Dr Peter Backhouse, Coordinator, Student Policy and Appeals or comments can be made to: policies@adelaide.edu.au.

Research Tuesdays

Ethics for Everyone
The ethical requirements that apply to groups, and what they mean for us as individuals

Presented by Professor Garrett Cullity, Hughes Professor of Philosophy

Date/Time: Tuesday 8 September 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre G04, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: Whoever we are, many of the ethical decisions we face apply to the actions we take as part of a group.

For example, we must consider the nature of our responsibilities to the environment, the underprivileged and groups previously wronged. There are even ethical components to the choice of products we buy.

So what determines whether our actions are right or wrong? Which groups, ethically speaking, do we actually belong to? And if a group is neglecting its responsibilities, how should we respond as individuals?

In this provocative presentation, the University of Adelaide's Professor Garrett Cullity tackles these challenging questions, examines the complex puzzles they give rise to and offers some answers.

Now all Adelaide OnLion members can register online - visit: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysseptember to secure your seat!

Speaker: Professor John Scott, The University of Plymouth (UK)

Research Assessment, pioneered in the UK, has become a global trend, advocated by Governments as a means to improve the quality of research and encourage a framework of excellence. Funding decisions are increasingly tied to decisions made by assessment panels and to measures of performance. What are the consequences of this for academic careers and publication? The lecture will draw on experience from participation in two Research Assessment Exercises and participation in the planning of a new Research Excellence Framework to consider how academics in Britain and Australia should respond to these developments.

Information for Researchers

Attention: Academic and Research Staff
Higher Degree by Research Students

Group of Eight Librarians: Survey of information resources

I am pleased to invite you to participate in a cost-benefit study aimed at assessing the value for academic communities of information resources made available to them by the University of Adelaide.

The libraries of the Australian Group of Eight (Go8) universities (www.go8.edu.au) have commissioned Outsell, Inc (www.outsellinc.com) to carry out the online survey, which is being conducted at three universities - The University of Adelaide, The Australian National University and The University of Queensland.

In particular, the Go8 Librarians are interested in obtaining feedback from researchers and teachers concerning:

  • the 'investment' in terms of money and time which researchers/teachers currently make in using information resources;
  • the cost which researchers/teachers would have to incur in terms of direct financial cost and time spent if information resources were not made available free at the point of use by their universities;
  • qualitative judgments of the benefit/value to researchers/teachers of the information resources.

I would be pleased if you would take a few moments from your busy research and teaching schedule to participate in this important survey - it should take you about 15 minutes to complete online. Your input and perspective as a researcher/teacher are extremely important in providing responses which will help to influence the future of information provision for research in the Go8 universities.

A summary of the aggregated results of the survey for each institution will be available to members of the research community (from December 2009).

The Library, with generous support from UniBooks, is making available ten book vouchers (value of $100 each) for a draw after the conclusion of the survey period. All respondents to the survey will be included in the draw - but the survey responses will remain anonymous.

Also, if you are prepared to be involved in a follow-up interview, or focus group, please indicate in the appropriate place on the survey.

For further information, or if you have difficulty accessing the survey, contact me directly at: ray.choate@adelaide.edu.au or if you have any concerns or questions about this online survey, you can also contact David Powell, Director & Senior Consultant, Outsell UK: dpowell@outsellinc.com.

To participate in the survey, please visit: www.digisurvey.com/adelaide

Thank you
Ray Choate, University Librarian
