Lifting P-plate age will cut road toll

"Raising the provisional licence age to 18 and having a maximum speed limit of 80km/h during the first year of driving would greatly reduce the number of youth crashes," Craig Kloeden, from the Centre for Automotive Safety Research, said. He also believes young drivers should be made to spend more time on their learner's permit. Mr Kloeden's recommendations stem from the results of a CASR five-year study of 50,000 young drivers aged 16 to 19. The study found young drivers were twice as likely to have an accident during their first few months of driving on a provisional licence than they were after a year of driving experience. "It demonstrates that time spent behind the wheel is a very important determinant of crash risk," he said.
Many topics are covered in the University of Adelaide's 2009 CASR Seminar Series.

Electronic Recycling Week - unload it today

North Terrace and Waite Campuses
21 - 25 September

The University's first eRecycling Week runs from Monday 21 September until Friday 25 September, 2009.

Anything with a cord or battery can be recycled - our aim is to safely divert the University's electronic waste from landfill and to recycle it.

Safely disposing of e-waste is healthier for the environment and preserves our natural resources while decreasing pollution caused by the leaching of toxic materials. Join us in being proactive about eRecycling – Australia is one of only a few developed countries that allows e-waste to be dumped into landfill, and the University is running eRecycling Week as a vital part of its Environmental Management program.

To get involved, speak to your School Manager or contact Mathew Jeffrey, Environmental Projects Officer.

Drop Off Locations map (pdf 1MB).
Further information about the benefits of eRecycling and details about what can be recycled are on the eRecycling website.

Invitation to participate in strategy in prevention of child abuse & neglect

An important initiative we are supporting over the next two months is the National Attitudinal Survey, an innovative community project designed to gauge Australia's attitudes on issues of child abuse and neglect.

Led by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) and supported by the Federal Government and universities, the short 15-minute survey will bring together Australia's public sector, business, communities and individuals to form one voice against child abuse and neglect.

Consider this:

  • Over 30,000 children are abused or neglected in Australia every year.
  • 1 in 3 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18.
  • 1 in 7 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18.

How can you act right now? By logging on to:
preventingchildabuse.com.au

We hope you choose to support this vital survey.

Thank you

2009 CASR Seminar Series

The Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) seminar series addresses major topics in the fight to reduce road trauma and highlights the latest research in the area.

Day & Time: Fridays, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Venue: Art Gallery Auditorium, North Terrace

23 October
Pedestrian Impact Testing

Andrew van den Berg and Giulio Ponte

New technologies and designs are continually being introduced into motor vehicles to improve the safety for the occupants. Simultaneously, consumers are demanding more and expecting 5 star safety for the cars they buy and drive.

But what happens when you step outside of your car? How safe are the cars we drive, when we are not driving them and we are walking beside them or crossing the road in-front of them?

This seminar will introduce the audience to the Australian and European methods and techniques used to test and assess vehicles to determine how safe they are for pedestrians. Take a trip into pedestrian safety, with test footage and results from the only Impact laboratory of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and see how safe your car is for pedestrians.

Medical Conditions as a factor in crash causation

Tori Lindsay

The extent to which medical conditions contribute to crash causation is not well understood. However there are indications they may play a significant role.

In recent In-Depth Crash Investigation of Metropolitan crashes it was identified that over 13% of active participants were involved in the crash as a direct result of a medical condition or acute medical event.

Clay-Mahler Lectures on Mathematics

Three distinguished visiting mathematicians will give FREE lectures at the University of Adelaide.

Date: Friday 25 September
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus

Understanding hypersurfaces through tropical geometry
Speaker: Dr Mohammed Abouzaid, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Clay Lecturer.
Time: 12:10pm

Given a polynomial in two or more variables, one may study the zero locus from the point of view of different mathematical subjects (number theory, algebraic geometry). This talk explains how tropical geometry allows to encode all topological aspects by elementary combinatorial objects called "tropical varieties."

Stable commutator length
Speaker: Professor Danny Calegari, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Clay Lecturer.
Time: 1:40pm

Stable commutator length answers the question: "what is the simplest surface in a given space with prescribed boundary?" where "simplest" is interpreted in topological terms. This topological definition is complemented by several equivalent definitions - in group theory, as a measure of non-commutativity of a group; and in linear programming, as the solution of a certain linear optimization problem. On the topological side, scl is concerned with questions such as computing the genus of a knot, or finding the simplest 4-manifold that bounds a given 3-manifold. On the linear programming side, scl is measured in terms of certain functions called quasimorphisms, which arise from hyperbolic geometry (negative curvature) and symplectic geometry (causal structures).

School Colloquium

The proof of the Poincaré conjecture
Speaker: Professor Terence Tao, University of California (UCLA), Clay-Mahler Lecturer and 2006 Fields Medallist.
Time: 3:10pm

In a series of three papers from 2002-2003, Grigori Perelman gave a spectacular proof of the Poincaré Conjecture (every smooth compact simply connected three-dimensional manifold is topologically isomorphic to a sphere), one of the most famous open problems in mathematics (and one of the seven Clay Millennium Prize Problems worth a million dollars each), by developing several new groundbreaking advances in Hamilton's theory of Ricci flow on manifolds. This talk describes in broad detail how the proof proceeds, and briefly discusses some of the key turning points in the argument.

Research Tuesdays

Hard Sell
The Ethics of Marketing

Presented by Professor Pascale Quester, Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions
& Asia Pacific editor for the Journal of Marketing Communications.

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 October 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre G04, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: If television's The Gruen Transfer, Choice magazine and the endless flow of on-line complaints are anything to go by, the marketing world is rife with unethical behaviour.

Indeed, a growing global body of research into corporate responsibility is revealing a deep undercurrent of public distrust. So how have we reached this point and, most importantly, can it change?

In this controversial presentation, University of Adelaide marketing and consumer behaviour expert Professor Pascale Quester will dissect the many ethical dilemmas faced by marketers on a daily basis.

She will also offer a variety of perspectives that could improve the morality of their decisions, and discuss the critical role to be played by "ethical consumers".

Now all Adelaide OnLion members can register online - visit: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysoctober to secure your seat!
For further details visit: www.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdays/ or phone 8303 3692.

Australian Institute of Physics (SA) and Women-In-Physics Public Lecture

"To planets or just to the shops, Plasmas pave the path"
Speaker: A/Prof Christine Charles, Plasma Research Laboratory, Australian National University

Date/Time: Wednesday 23 September, 7:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Lecture. All welcome.

The Claire Corani Memorial awards will be presented at the lecture.

Plasmas have existed since the very first moments of the Universe. It is the stuff of stars. It fills the space between stars. It gives us the beautiful northern and southern aurorae. Our houses have plasma TV displays, plasma lights (fluorescent tubes). Everywhere we look, there is plasma. But we stand on solid earth and the solid state accounts for less than one percent of the total mass of the Universe. The rest is plasma, a hot ionised gas containing positive and negative charges (except, perhaps, for dark matter). By properly harnessing the plasma state we can make microchips for computers, we can make plasma engines (thrusters) to get to the planets and we can make fuel cells to take people just down to the shops.
