Uni in the News

Scientists uncover how bugs evade capture

Microbiologist Dr Connor Thomas, of the University of Adelaide, commented on findings in the US about how the deadly bacteria listeria spreads from cell to cell without being exposed to the body's immune system. Once inside a cell the bacteria develops a protein tail to help it move, Dr Thomas said. Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen that enters the body through cells in the intestines. Dr Thomas said listeria is commonly found in foods such as cheese and meat, which causes harm to some people who are immuno-compromised or pregnant women. Thomas said the paper, published in Nature Cell Biology, is a big breakthrough in the current understanding of intercellular bacteria movement.

General Information for Staff

University of Adelaide Building Program Update: Invitation to Staff and Students

Staff and students are invited to a meeting on Friday 2 October to hear about the next steps in the University's four-year $400 million building program to provide first-class research and teaching facilities across its campuses.

The building program has already seen the development of several major new facilities including the Wine Innovation Cluster and the Plant Accelerator buildings at Waite Campus, the new Vet School at Roseworthy, the Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences building on the North Terrace Campus, and the redevelopment of 10 Pulteney Street.

In January 2010 we will begin developing a new science precinct on the lower level of the North Terrace Campus.

A new building incorporating our new Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS), a 420-seat lecture theatre and additional teaching and research facilities will be developed on the site currently occupied by Union Hall. This will help accommodate our urgent demands for increased space as well as housing a world-leading centre for science.

While this is an exciting long-term project that will have many benefits for staff and students, the University acknowledges that the construction phase will cause some disruption to normal academic life and that the loss of Union Hall may have significance for some people in the community.

Please come to the meeting to hear the University's plans for the building development and process management.

Location: G03, Napier Building
Date: 2 October 2009
Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

If you can't attend the briefing and would like more information about this project, you can read a Frequently Asked Questions document on the University's Building Life Impact webpage: www.adelaide.edu.au/space.

Pedestrian Impact Testing

Andrew van den Berg and Giulio Ponte

New technologies and designs are continually being introduced into motor vehicles to improve the safety for the occupants. Simultaneously, consumers are demanding more and expecting 5 star safety for the cars they buy and drive.

But what happens when you step outside of your car? How safe are the cars we drive, when we are not driving them and we are walking beside them or crossing the road in-front of them?

This seminar will introduce the audience to the Australian and European methods and techniques used to test and assess vehicles to determine how safe they are for pedestrians. Take a trip into pedestrian safety, with test footage and results from the only Impact laboratory of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and see how safe your car is for pedestrians.

Medical Conditions as a factor in crash causation

Tori Lindsay

The extent to which medical conditions contribute to crash causation is not well understood. However there are indications they may play a significant role.

In recent In-Depth Crash Investigation of Metropolitan crashes it was identified that over 13% of active participants were involved in the crash as a direct result of a medical condition or acute medical event.

The Ethics of Marketing

& Asia Pacific editor for the Journal of Marketing Communications.

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 October 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre G04, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: If television's The Gruen Transfer, Choice magazine and the endless flow of on-line complaints are anything to go by, the marketing world is rife with unethical behaviour.

Indeed, a growing global body of research into corporate responsibility is revealing a deep undercurrent of public distrust. So how have we reached this point and, most importantly, can it change?

In this controversial presentation, University of Adelaide marketing and consumer behaviour expert Professor Pascale Quester will dissect the many ethical dilemmas faced by marketers on a daily basis.

She will also offer a variety of perspectives that could improve the morality of their decisions, and discuss the critical role to be played by "ethical consumers".
