Uni in the News

Kaplan, Inc. and University of Adelaide join forces

Private education company Kaplan, Inc. and the University of Adelaide have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to investigate the establishment of a Kaplan University campus in Adelaide. Kaplan plans to introduce innovative e-learning technologies to deliver degree programs across Australia, giving more people the option to study on-campus or online. The first intake is expected to start in 2011. Financial services and business programs will be offered initially, with future expansion into other fields such as allied health. Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor James McWha, said the primary mission of the partnership was to expand access to higher education in Australia. "Under-represented groups, including working adults, students from low socio-economic backgrounds and students in regional and remote areas will be the big winners from this agreement. "With a focus on students from non-traditional pathways, we'll be helping to meet both State and Federal Governments' goals of increasing access to quality education," Professor McWha said.

Staff Services Online – Update to Go Live Date

Staff were recently advised that the University is implementing a new Human Resources Information System (HRIS) to replace the current payroll system. At the same time a new Student Administration system is being implemented and an online facility, Staff Services Online (SSO), will be implemented to enable University staff to apply for leave online, access payslips and to update banking and personal information. These systems will not go live on 4 November as previously announced. Further testing of these systems is required before release to the University community.

The Core Business Systems (CBS) Program team are now working with Human Resources & Student Administration staff to determine the next window of opportunity for system Go Live that will best align with the University's Academic calendar. Once this revised Go Live window has been agreed the CBS Program Board will announce a new date to the University community.

Meanwhile frequently asked questions relating to SSO are available at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/cbs/hr/SSO/ [UA only].

If you have any other queries please feel free to contact the CBS Change Management Team via email to: Michelle Chaplin.

The Inaugural A.E.V. Richardson Lecture

The School of Agriculture, Food & Wine invites you to a FREE Public Lecture -
Presented by Dr R.A. (Tony) Fischer FAIAST FTSE AM, Honorary Research Fellow, CSIRO

Date/Time: Thursday 15 October 2009, 4:00pm
Venue: Plant Genomics Centre, Waite Campus

Synopsis: Tony Fischer is a distinguished crop scientist who has been recognised previously for his contribution to wheat agronomy, crop physiology and genetic improvement through awards such as the C.M. Donald medal, the William Farrer memorial medal and membership to the Order of Australia. He has travelled widely in the developing world and has a particular interest in agricultural development. The title of the inaugural A.E.V. Richardson Lecture will be 'What's happening to cereal yields globally?'. Cereal yield progress has been and will remain vital for moderating cereal price increases and feeding the world's poor adequately. The lecture will present recent progress in cereal yields (wheat, rice, maize) across a number of key growing locations in the world, seeking lessons particularly from the perspectives of breeding, agronomy and crop physiology. It will then discuss prospects for further yield growth, under the headings of yield gap closing and of yield potential increase. The roles of crop physiology, molecular biology and genetic engineering will be considered, as well as implications for natural resource use efficiency.

The inaugural A.E.V. Richardson Lecture is named in honour of the former foundation Professor of Agriculture and first Director of the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, Professor Arnold Edwin Victor Richardson (1883 - 1949).

"Power is the great aphrodisiac" - Henry Kissinger

"I don't want revenge. I want understanding" - Carol, Oleanna

John is a University Lecturer on the brink of achieving tenure. Carol, a failing student, comes to his office to discuss her poor class performance.

Midway through the play, depending on one's point of view, an act of sexual harassment does or does not occur. A bitter battle for power ensues between two dogmatic individuals whose inability to communicate and whose use and abuse of jargon and political correctness threatens to undermine basic issues of freedom of thought.

David Mamet's Oleanna is a savagely ironic play that explores the inadequacies of the University education system, portrays the delicate boundaries that exist between teacher and student, and brutally charts a relationship that degenerates before the audiences' eyes.

But what actually happens in this see-saw of power? Is it male predatory harassment? Rampaging feminist propaganda? Or something else entirely?

Cast: Brant Eustice as John and Rachael Grauwelman-Smith as Carol.
