Uni in the NewsWine to thrill the sensorsTiny optical probes are being developed as an "early warning system" for winemakers who want to check wine maturity without opening the barrel. The technology, being developed at the University of Adelaide, will allow them to monitor and fix problems as they arise, without interfering with wine that should have been left in the barrel. Professor Dennis Taylor, Head of the Discipline of Wine and Horticulture, is working on a prototype with Professor Tanya Monro at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing. Instead of pulling out the stopper and sampling every barrel, the winemaker will be able to monitor the temperature and chemical composition from afar. Optical fibres transmit light of specific wavelengths into the barrel. The light interacts with the wine and results are relayed to a computer. "It would revolutionise the industry... We would have an early warning system that could be used not only for wine but all sorts of things like beer," Professor Taylor said. General Information for StaffSurvey of Staff Satisfaction with IT SupportThe University of Adelaide is participating in the University Benchmark survey for IT Support Quality. Staff and postgraduates will be invited to complete a short user satisfaction survey by following a link in an email they will receive from itsupport.survey@adelaide.edu.au. Peer Networking InformationImproving the first year student experience has led to the development and implementation of a range of initiatives by the Transition Unit in partnership with academic and support services. UniStep (University Student Transition Experience Program) is a comprehensive semester-long orientation for first year students. There are also increasing numbers of peer networking programs available to students in their local Faculty/School learning communities. New Information Session from the University's EAP provider, Corporate Health GroupIn August, the University's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider, Corporate Health Group, conducted a number of information sessions for staff and managers about managing stress and the new EAP service. As a continuation of this, Corporate Health Group will be conducting further sessions looking at some of the common causes of stress and how to prevent it. The first of these one hour sessions will look at one of the causes of stress: different personalities and communication styles within a work group. Christmas/New Year Close Down re: Advertising Positions VacantMarket research on candidate response rates to advertising over the Christmas and New Year period shows a low level of candidate responses and a reduction in eligible candidates applying for roles. Recruitment Services has therefore implemented an advertising cut off period to ensure that you receive the best possible outcome from advertising. Should you choose to advertise roles in December please ensure all advertising cut off dates reflect your ability to respond to candidates in a timely manner, i.e. if you are unable to respond to candidates until the beginning of January we would advise that the cut off date of your position reflects this date to manage candidate expectations relating to their acknowledgement.
Any paperwork received after this time will not be processed until the New Year.
Advertising will resume again as per normal from 7 January 2010 with the deadline for HR to receive paperwork being Close of Business Thursday of each week for your position to be advertised at the end of the following week. Please don't hesitate to contact the HR Service Centre on 8313 1111 if you have any queries, or advertisements coming up before this time.

The Development of the Electric CarPresented by the History of Science, Ideas & Technology Group. The electric car in many of its forms has been much in the news in the last year. This illustrated lecture will trace the story of the electric car from the first forms of electric propulsion, the hey-day period from 1895 to 1910 (when one third of US cars sold in 1900 were electric) through to the latest electric sports cars. While production fell in the 1920s, there was resurgence in electric vehicle production when petrol was scarce in the Second World War and again when oil prices increased in the 1970s. Despite the US Government's Federal Clean Air Incentive Program of 1976 and the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate of 1990 (California), electric car development has been undermined by apathy, opposition and collusion on the part of vested interests right up to the present day. This talk will also present an opportunity for examination of electric car development in recent years.
